Preparing HDD or CF card for A1200 on Os4.1 NG (X1000/Sams)

Post by Shamron »

Hi :-)

I have an X1000 and also 1200 and 4000. I have backed up the system disks on the latter ones on the X1000.

Is it possible to format, partition / prepare a new harddrive or compactflash on the X1000, with either sfs or pfs and a patched scsi.device for the specific machines so I can copy the backed up system files back onto the disk and insert it into the classic machines?

This would be SO nice, as I have both mediator and a lot of already configured stuff, especially on the 4000.

I know I can use winuae, and all the guides on YouTube is winuae only, but I didn't get an X1000 to use my pc, unless I really have to. :-)

Ben.-

Edit: I got tired of looking at the title "NY Amiga" which was cause by autocorrect. It was ment to be NG Amiga.

Sure. Partitioning schema is the same of classic and NG. You can use HDToolbox or Media Toolbox, whichever you like. Just be sure to add the 68k versions of the file systems to the Add/Update resp. Add File system section of the tool.

Hi Thomas. I tried this, but as soon as I added the old sfs (I think it was 1.277 or 1.290 entered the identifier (53465300) I got a grim reaper. I guess it was because I added an old fs with the same identifier as the os4 version of sfs... Should I enter another or give it another name?

I tried to prepare a cf yesterday on OS4.1FE on my X1000 and set it up as fat to transfer some files to a 1200 with PCMCIA cf adapter and fat95. I tried using ffs and sfs as well, but when I start hdtoolbox on the 1200, it shows scsi.device where I internally use a sd card adaptor and a 8gb sd card, it shows carddisk.device and it shows compactflash.device.

When I select the latter, I it shows CF Card unknown and when I try to set it up, I get something like "this device can't be something something by this something".

What you enter into Media Toolbox does not matter until you save changes to disk. If you get a Grim Reaper from Media Toolbox, it is a bug which should be fixed.

If you add an older version of a file system to a disk, it should not matter, either. AmigaDOS always uses the highest version of a file system, it just ignores the older version if a newer one is already there.

HDToolbox cannot be used on compactflash.device. Compactflash.device does not support Amiga partitions anyway. It was designed to be used only with mountlists, specifically with CF0 and FAT95. If you want to use FAT95 on the CF card, then it should be as simple as selecting the CF0:unformatted icon on the desktop and choosing "format disk" from the menu.

Hi folks.

I just found my old 8GB cf card that i used as hd on my A4000 with mediator, radeon 9200, spider, rtl8139, and sb128. I also got a fastata mkVI

I now need to access thiscard on my sam460ex / os4.1fe

But when i open mediatoolbox on my sam460ex with os4.1fe, the partitions are all red, and with pfs3 (50465303) so i am trying to add this filesystem to my os4.1fe. But where do i save the handler? i've read somewhere that it should NOT go in sys:l or was it kickstart?

Where do you suggest i put it, and will i need to do more than add the correct filesystem do the partition and save to disk?

When I first got a µA1 years ago, I removed the HD from my A4000 (everything formatted with OS3 FFS), connected it to my µA1, booted the µA1, mounted the OS3 HD with "mounter" and copied all my old OS3 files to the µA1. I would suggest you try preparing an HD with OS3 FFS on OS3 hardware and then try connecting it to OS4 hardware. If it doesn't show up on your OS4 hardware, try using SYS:System/mounter to mount it.

Thanks for your reply, but in this matter, i need the files on the pfs3ds formatted cf card :-P THEN i'm never touchin anything byt SFS again....

I got pfs3ds(020) working on my saam460 with os4.1fe though, i just added the 68k pfs3ds020 version and took a leap of faith. It let me copy 4 of 5 partitions, too bad the last partition was the storage one with my personal files, documents, yam-inbox, etc.
Image

Next step is to use e-uae to emulate a 4000, then install pfs3ds on the emulated a4k and try that path. :-P

I asked about e-uae here http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... =14&t=3466

I read quite a bit of your posts yesterday, especially the one about how to translate dos type identifiers. Brilliant post. :-)

But how can i safely add the 68K version on os4.1 without it interfering with the native sfs. I did this once, when i was younger and even more silly, and as soon as i pressed save, i understood what i had done. :-)

I added pfs3ds yesterday (more here, with pics of the error i got http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... =14&t=3466) and i thought i'd be careful not to put the handler in "L" but i noticed today that the OS had copied it there itself, but i guess since it has a different identifier, it doesn't disturb that much.

On os4, i understand the filesystems are placed in /kickstart, but is it ok to have a 68k version in "L"?

If you needed to add a file system to the HDD to make it work, then it didn't work on 68k OS, either. Or it was a second harddrive when the first one had the needed file systems added to it.

The mask error should go away if you change the mask to 0xffffffff. Or check the mask for SDH0-SDH3 and use the same one for SDH4.

The L directory is a place to store files, just like any other directory on the harddrive. The OS does not touch anything in there, unless you explicitely reference it in a mountlist or DosDriver. It really does not matter where on your harddrive SFS is stored. It only matters what you add to the harddrive in the add/update dialogue of HDToolbox resp. the add file systems dialogue of Media Toolbox.

Furthermore the version of SFS which comes with OS 4.1 FE is 1.290 while the latest 68k version is 1.279. The latter should be ignored because the former with the higher version number is already in the system.

You don't need to install PFS3 to use a harddrive with it. Once the file system has been added to the RDB, it can be used everywhere. The files which are copied to the harddrive during installation are not needed.

BTW, PFS3 comes with a very detailed documentation which explains how file systems are added to a harddrive and how partitions refer to them. All this hasn't changed with OS4.

You might also want to run this: http://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de ... report.lha and attach the report here. Then I could have a look at your partition layout and perhaps give some tips how to improve it.

Re: Preparing HDD or CF card for A1200 on Os4.1 NG (X1000/Sa

Post by Shamron »

I didn't have to add a filesystem to the cf card, i added it to my os4.1fe:L directory.

The cf card contains os3.9 for the A4000 with mediator, fastata mkvi, etc that i mentioned. Since os4.1fe got ffs and sfs, but not pfs, i couldn't access the card so i added pfs3 and pfs3ds in media toolbox with the identifiers 50465303 for pfs3 and 50445303 for pfs3ds. I used the 020 version of the 68K files, assuming that of all, those were the LEAST not supported ones. :-P

Edit: Here's the report. It's not a very "structured" and well-planned disk layout. this is a 250GB disk i just put in my sam460ex and a week ago randomly decided to install linux on as well :-)
