Bug in AmigaOS 4.1 CD for Classic when using on Amiga 3000

Post by Amigafan »

There is not possible to boot AmigaOS on Amiga 3000 due to bug in AmigaOS CD.
When you try to boot from CD you'll get message
FAILED to preload Kickstart/JXFileSystem
ERROR: Could not preload module list
C:BootLoader failed returncode 20

After my investigation it turned out that there is a mistake in
System/Kickstart/KickLayout-A3000

There is

Code: Select all

MODULE Kickstat/JXFileSystem
and should be Kickstart not Kickstat - missing r

To boot AmigaOS 4.1 on Amiga 3000 you have to edit this file, write the missing letter and burn the ISO again.

I've installed OS 4.1Update 2 from a hard drive partition when I could not get my CD ROM to work. The boot floppy just looks for the volume name

I've reported the problem for you - BZ #7945.

[edit]
I'm delighted to advise that this issue has now been fixed - within hours of being reported. The next release of the Classic CD should not show this problem any more.

It is nothing to be proud of.
This kind of mistake - preventing OS4-CD to boot - shouldn't get beyond betatesters.
If this problem occurs to someone less familiar with AmigaOS he will probably think that the OS itself is lame.
It was not only not corrected during beta testing but up to now you didn't even know the problem exist and probably it would have still be there in the next release.

I've managed to find only one report about this bug on amiga.org forum

As I read it, he was glad the bug was fixed within hours (rather than months); this forum IS for bug reports among other things.

Write one letter "r" in one text file doesn't need months of hard work of the professional OS programmers.
So it should be done within seconds not hours

This fix is done. Locking this topic before it gets more out of hand.
