Swap partition fail here..

Post by tlosmx »

Hi guys this is the first time im writhing here because support is needed.
I im in trouble every time a make the swap partition on my Amiga 4000 the system reboot and the Rom crash.
I cant go in early startup too .

My configuration is
Amiga 4000 D
Cyberstorm 060 50 and 604e 200 128 Mb ram tested in 60 and 70ns config
Acard and Verbatim SSD 120 GB
Maxtor 20 Gb Uide HD
Mediator 4000 DI
Radeon 9200 256mb / Tested with voodoo 5500 too Same problem
Spider USB
Realteck 10Mbit Lan 8029
Creative SB 128
HD FFD .
Buster 11 and 16mb slow fast and 2 mb chip ram

When i format the system with FFS there isnt problem Os4.1 run make the upgrades browse in internet no problems
when i make the Swap no problems on 4.1 side... after when i turn off the amiga and turn on another time starting the crashes
...

I forgot to write the only way for made the system run another time in 68k or PPC mode is format the SSD with another computer or the system dont boot
The only solution for now is make the amiga stay turned on forever but i think isnt the best solution ... thanks

Lets get the obvious out of the way

Are you using the correct block sizes for all of your filesystems?

Also, in situations like this it is always better to get it all up and running with the bare essentials and running stable before introducing the likes of a SSD for example. Because then you can troubleshoot things fairly accurately.

Did you have a stable system without the SSD for example?

I'd be inclined to go back to the last time you had a stable system and start introducing things and seeing what conflicts arise the only problem is the further you get into it the more likely you are to have a few variables you always need to swap around to isolate the culprit. Also be prepared to accept that some times something just won't work with something else. It's do your head in but you'll finally accept it. I've had my own battles along these lines too.

And with that winded reply I say good luck of course ;)

Yes this system is stable and running very good in 68k and in ppc too.

Block size for swap ?
I had try with 4096, 1024,512 block size
I had put the swap in the first 4gb zone and on the end of the ssd the result is the same guru of the kickstart rom 3.1
I repeat everything come in the 68k side during the first boot... Without swap all go and run clear... But swap is really need because only 60mb of free ram there is on the system and are really low for make it usable ..

Thanks Luigi

Ok, so what you're saying is you've never had a stable system running with a "SWAP" activated?

Have you tried partitioning the SSD for bootable partition and fast data partition but putting SWAP on the 20 GB HD? I can't think or remember of any reason why you can't have it on a seperate HD. I say this because I guess you want the speed for the WORK partition so want to boot from the SSD.

Just quickly tell us what kind of variations have you tried between drives etc?

Tlosmx,

The 60 MB left is normal; you can get up to 100 MB with some clever work arounds. A 99 buck BigRamPlus will give you a quick swap partition that I have never used up on my system, so I deleted my hard drive swap partition. An SSD is actually slower than the cybppc.device on a U160 HDD due to the interface change.

Don't know why you can't boot with OS 3.1 ROMs though.

I cant have the swap on the Uata becaouse it is on the scsi.device (amiga 4000 internal ide controller) and the swap is only supported in 4.1 classic on the cyberppc.device.

I will try to made some test with a samsung Sata hd for not spoil another time the isntallation on the SSD.
All help are appreciated

I'm sorry, I didn't mean a "Uata" but an Ultrawide 160 MB/s SCSI HDD. I use U320's at 15K rotation, but I don't see much transfer speed difference; latency should be lower though.

Nothing to do with my uw hds.... need some jumpers for make the right configuration that i dont have.... will investigate later.
Meanwile i made another time the swap partition and i made it
in the first 2gb of the ssd ... it is 568mb and it is 4096 block size...

And i recive on screen on a shell under 68k
Bootloader filed..
Later i will make a shot of the screen just for better understand
