Sam460ex Revisited Fun Factor Up!! Lazarus Lives! [Solved]

Post by jdupuis »

Hi all,

The Sam460ex system is go! There are some things in my findings I thought important to address. First, the Crucial CT25664AC800 2GB DDR2 (PC2-6400) 200 pin CL6 was just what the Doctor ordered. Second, erased and re-partioned the HD to 2 ea. 10GB SFS/02 Partitions. System and Work. Reinstalled AOS 4.1 FE for Sam and used the Voo-Doo monitor until my Radeon HD 5450 arrives. All is well with RuninUAE and Odyssey Web Browsing is tolerable graphic-wise with sili502. Thirdly, I found the 3.5" internal Multi-card Reader to be defective. Removed, simply put. Two front USB 2.0 ports are fine. I have an external USB Multi-Card reader that works fine. Looking forward to the Radeon HD and ENVY24 cards to arrive. Awesome little machine. Just needed some TLC. Things are looking up.

Cheers!!

Great.

I wonder how many Sam460ex users that sold their machine or put it into storage due to picking the wrong memory module.

Don't know. It's a lot like a Mac, though. Memory specs are very specific and if you don't pay attention to specs - it ain't gonna work. This Sam's tell-tale sign was Grim Reaper for no apparent reason frequently and, of course, researching the memory module part itself.

Video card has arrived!! Will post. I believe the results will be amazing!

Cheers!!

Hi all!!

My Sam460ex with Radeon HD 5450 2GB is terrific!! Not so hot on YouTube videos but that's okay. It's running like it supposed to be now. The ENVY24 card is coming from ACube and that will make it better as well. RunInUAE is working fine, I'm pleased to report. In light of the Lenten and Easter season I dub this Sam - Lazarus. So now as I wait for the sound card I will start investigating NVGETVAR and see what and why Lazarus only sees 1 internal USB connection and other little things. A brand new squeeky clean new install of AOS is in order as well. I'll save up some pennies to get a Warp3D supported Radeon HD later this summer. The 5450 would make a pleasant second card in the X1000 for back up. Lazarus running well now, I'm going to break. :D

Cheers!!

Hi!

The ENVY24HT card arrived and my Sam lives! Prior to installing the new sound card I followed the advice I received. Took the board out out and cleaned all ports - dirty. Very, very carefully removed the two socketed chips and blew out the sockets. Cleaned the connections on all PCI boards and re-assembled. Used my blank 16 GB SD card and installed AOS4.1FE without a hitch. I must say that Odyssey is a no-go. Even with 5450 GPU, Sound card and memory. Web sites like this one, Amiga.org, AmigaKit and A-EON are fine. YouTube is right out. Slow motion video/sound cutting out. Maybe I'm still missing something, don't know. However, I am still pleased with the way Lazarus is now as opposed to the way it was when received. Lazarus lives and I will find more time on my day off to play around with it, May try NetSurf Web Browser as an alternative or install MorphOS 3.9. :D

Cheers!!

<edit> I meant NetSurf had Nautilus (linux) on the brain

For Youtube try QT, SMtube and Liveforit-Mplayer with the commercial Radeon HD v2.x driver from A-Eon, available via AmiStore .
Use 360p (fvl) as the preferred quality in the Smtube settings

Thank you Spectre660!

I already have AmiStore, Radeon 2.10 and Warp installed. I'll install the others you've suggested. It'll give me something on my day off to play around with.

I'm still at a puzzle as to all the U-Boot settings - what was changed, what wasn't. I have the SATA Raid 3114 card and it puzzles me as to why LUN 1,0 can't be reached. 3114 has Com 1 thru 4. DVD drive is in Com2 and reports as LUN 2,0. SATA HD is plugged into Com1 and reports as LUN 0,0. No matter where or in any combination do I ever get 1,0 and 2,0 <or> 0,0 and 1,0. I've read a post on this but I still am left mystified unless 1,0 is reserved for SATA2 port on board not in use. Oh well, this is small potatoes. I'll have fun with 'Lazarus' anyway. He's working.

Cheers!!

I would say that Odyssey is a must-go. Even on my Sam440ep-Flex @ 733 MHz and Radeon 9250. Your Sam460 shouldn't be slower than that. How fast is your machine; 1, 1.1 or 1.15 GHz?

Hi duga!

Glad you asked! Now, I believe there is "Something Rotten in the State of Denmark." I have re-established a very good running install of AOS 4.1 FE. My Sam 460ex is 1150 MHz Freq: 50 Hz. I have the SATA HD plugged into Com1 of the 3114 and the DVD-R in Com2. Boot Sequence set for DVD first in order. I have to say it boots up and runs great - compared to the X1000. Until internet time. I am questioning the Settings in NVGETVAR. AmiUpdate works fine, standard sites like Hyperion, Amiga.org, etc are okay. YouTube, MSN and sites like that are a bog-down. I have noticed in U-Boot settings that Ethernet Speed is set to 1152xxx something or other. I'm on my X1000 now and forgot to catch the setting. Should there be an Ethernet Speed set at all in NVGETVAR?
All Radeon Drivers updated and WarpSi. AvCodecs installed.

So I can make Odyssey go away. I just want to make sure that all of Lazarus' U-Boot SetEnv settings are in there default state or the state that was set by ACube or AmigaKit prior to delivery to original owner. I'm the third owner. <edit> U-Boot was updated at some point to 2015 prior to me getting this Sam.

Cheers!!
