Would digg this fanless fan on X1000

Wow, just looked up that cooler, it's 180mm W & 148mm H, thats 7 in x 6 in, huge & would never fit.

It looks like it MIGHT have enough "lift" over the top surface of the CPU to go over the top of the RAM banks.
Maybe. Docs I have seen are not that specific. Then, of course, that's if you don't mind removing your heatsink to change RAM.

I wonder if using the "outer banks" would make the clearance? Nice that there is an opening in the motherboard tray under the CPU. That makes access available without removing Nemo, at least.

I did see a warning that it should be removed before moving the computer. Maybe the "support strut" comment I made earlier was more serious than I thought.

As cool as it looks, I'll stick with my stock cooler for now. Sometimes practical wins out in the end.

I've given some thought into replacing the existing heatsink & fan for something quieter. Take note, with a memory stick on both sides of the cpu, you only have 3" of space to work for a replacement or a bit less. Cuts down on what can be installed.

You don't need to replace the heat-sink; just replace the fan (it's a 60mm one). I just replaced mine with one a Fractal Design silent series 60mm fan, and my machine is quieter now. I also hooked it up to the fan controller, so that I could back off the fan speed to just a bit below the max. The hard-drive is probably the noisiest component in the machine now.

I still have to check what temperature the CPU gets up to, but the heat-sink feels cool, so I'm not worried (NOTE: I live in an area with a mild climate).

You can check the cpu core temperature in CFE, "show temp", be interesting what it shows after a few hours of use. It got up to about 27C in this room one day & core #1 stabilized at 51C. I would want the core temp to remain the same or go down with a fan replacement.

I did check into that fan, seems it has to be ordered from overseas into the States.

I would also like to have a more silent X1000. My old A1 was deadsilent compared to my X1000. What fan's are that are noisy that we can replace. Is it the cpu fan, the bigger fan's on back or the psu fan ? Its under my table so i havent checked much what makes the higher noise. Thanks for help.

I disconnected the front. Just be sure to block off ALL the holes, slots, perforations on the back so the incoming air is only front to back.

I have a 3 speed exhaust fan that makes the most noise if set on high, so I set that on low speed. I pulled the cpu fan to get the make & number to look up the specs. Its a muticomp MC19624 12v Fan, 19CFM, 28dBA noise. The high air flow explaines the noise level. You can put a quieter fan in, but most won't push 19CFM, so cpu temps could go up a little, depending on how well the heatsink is working.

Speaking of small fans, my A1XE had the small original fan on it for 5 years with no heat problems. It did overheat when I first got it, but it was not the CFM, it was that the fan was too close to the heatsink and the center of the fan did not allow air to be drawn toward the hot center of the heatsink.

To fix that airflow problem I took a fan off an old graphics card and cut the fan out leaving only the outside frame. Then, with longer screws put the new 'spacer' under the fan. I also cut a shim, aluminum foil, that would direct air further into the heatsink before going up the chimney and put that between the spacer and the heatsink. Problem solved.

I wonder if the cpu fan noise is amplified because the fan is so close to the heatsink, be interesting to lift it a little bit to see if it helps with the noise & cooling.
