Hi there
Ever since I got my X1000, I tried to install Linux following Trevor's excellent guide "Debian_Linux_Installation_Rev2.5.1.4_X-1000.pdf". Unfortunaltely, I wasn't successful so far. First, using kernel 3.5.7, the problem was that my Radeon HD 6870 was not supported so the screen went blank. Later, the kernel 3.5.8 was released and I got a step further. But then, getting to the screen to select my county, the keyboard was unresponsive (a default AmigaOne keyboard from AmigaKit). However, with the new kernel 3.10.0 I finally got through the whole installation. According to the message at the end of the installation the boot partition is supposed to be 'sda8':
But then trying to boot using that partition (setenv -p bootargs "root=/dev/sda8") this results in some kernel panic, claiming that that partition is not found (if I get this messages right). Also, sda8 is not listed in the available partitions:
I checked the partitions table in MediaToolbox and this looks OK to me:
The kernel is located on a FAT formatted USB stick, btw., the same I used for the installation process.
What am I doing wrong? Can anybody help?
Greetings
Michael

Re: Installation problem (Kernel 3.10.0)
Hello,
I have had this problem a lot of times with MintPPC before to understand that I had to use a partition strictly inferior to 6 (up to /dev/sda5 works)
Maybe that somebody knows why ?
Good luck to reinstall Linux one more time

Linux can have 4 primary partitions only (+swap).zzd10h wrote:Hello,

If you want more partitions then #4 gets divided into logical partitions
starting with #5 (#4 disappears).
Since #8 would be a logical partition it would need 5,6,and 7 as each logical
partition is pointed to by the previous logical partition. Which is why #4
disappears as it only points to #5.
1 = Primary
2 = Primary
3 = Primary
4 = Primary or pointer to 5
That should be clear as mud.
Really, the best solution is Linux on a separate drive.

Alright, thanks for the advice, guys. So I'll probably just fit another harddrive, seems easier than repartitioning my whole setup.
