What could I have done wrong with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

Hi,

I've created a 64-bit x86 virtual machine with 1024 MB RAM. The Ubuntu 12.04.4 live dvd with kernel 3.11.0-15 boots to the Unity desktop without any problems. But ... if I open Firefox or another program, the Unity desktop freezes. With 2GB RAM works the Unity desktop and other programs without any problems.

It's not to recomment to use the Live Remix DVD with 1GB RAM.

Running Linux on AmigaONEs can require some tinkering.

That's confusing. The Ubuntu 12.04.2 64-bit x86 live DVD with the kernel 3.5.0-23 has no problems with 1 GB RAM.

I noticed. I was a bit surprised to find 2Gb in it, after learning I only had 1 in this. What does "exactly" mean in the following?
If both memory controllers are used, the memory population on each should exactly match (the
modules fitted to DIMM1 and DIMM2 should exactly match the modules fitted to DIMM3 and
DIMM4). ...
The two memory controllers can interleave access, providing double the access bandwidth, but ONLY if the memory is the same in both. I'll work with mis-matched DIMMS, but only at the speed yours currently runs at.
It doesn't sound good. I have 1Gb of Kingston HyperX DDR2 installed, but I haven't been able to find an exact match. Mostly I find unusable DDR3, or 8Gb. I can get a Kingston DDR2 1Gb board, but it's not HyperX, it's "SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory Model KVR667D2N5/1G." Do I get two (or four?) of those, and toss the HyperX?

One would probably work, but 2 would give you a matched pair, which is probably a good idea as these are a little slower than the HyperX

Just a quick comment to avoid confusion. You need to that "F" thing to boot the DVD in the first place. I presume you did?
Oops! No, I went with Boot from DVD. It's probably pointless to try it the "F" way until I manage to find more RAM, but I probably will anyway.
Incidentally, I did the "'F' thing" and saw no difference. I compared my photo of where it conked out when I used the second option on the boot menu, and it was identical.

Another question. If there is only one DIMM installed, it obviously doesn't have to match, and according the the QuickStartGuide can be in any of the four slots. If there are two, they must be identical and installed in opposing slots. If there are four, do all four have to match, or is it enough if the ones in opposing slots match?

Can I assume that if one tried to use three DIMMs, the X1000 would go up in a puff of smoke?
