Problem installing Lubuntu 14.10

Post by zzd10h »

Hello,
I have problem installing Lubuntu 14.10. I'm stuck at disk detection during the install process.

Following Xeno74 advices, I

1) added 3.17 kernel to my CF card (tested and booted OK under 12.04)

2) added the right initrd.gz to my CF card
downloaded from
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/di ... /initrd.gz

3) Booted with following CFE commands
CFE> ramdisk -z -addr=0x24000000 -fatfs cf0:initrd.gz
CFE> setenv bootargs "root=/dev/ramdisk"
CFE> boot -elf -noints -fatfs cf0:vmlinux-3.17

But install process fails at disk detection (the ethernet detection step is OK)

Failing step (in french)

When I exit the install process, I can see my partitions with cat /proc/diskstats
Ubuntu_1410_diskstats.JPG

I have only 1 disk on my x1000 with AOS and A-Eon Lubuntu 12.04 (/dev/sda4) partitions.

Thank you for your help

Thanks a lot for your bug report. First, could you try to install Lubuntu 14.10 with the Ubuntu longterm kernel 3.13.14?

Download: kernel-3.13.14-1-x1000-ubuntu-ppc64.tar.bz2

If this doesn't work, you could try to install Lubuntu 14.04.

Initrd for Lubuntu 14.04: initrd.gz

If this works then you could update it to 14.10. And we have to create a bug report for 14.10 on launchpad.net.

It's me who thanks you ;)

1) same problem with 3.13 kernel

2) same problem with the 14.04 initrd with 3.17 kernel and with 3.13.14 kernel

Maybe it's related to my volume partition scheme ?

I have only 1 HD with all my OS4 and Linux partitions. Of course, it worked with 12.04 AEon Linux DVD.

Could you install an additional hard disc for Linux?

I don't have a spare HD.

For information, I just retried to boot the 12.04 DVD and restart the installation processus.
My partition scheme is still well recognized with 12.04.

Not a problem, 12.04 is enough for me.
Thank you to have take time for my problem.
Bye

Hello zzd10h,

Observe here my first report of this problem (1st comment): http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... t=2614 when a couple of retries made it acknowledge the HD and then on the next page you can see that when I had to install it again I had no more such luck. I have a theory it has something to do with HD space that went through only quick format because since then I tried it with 3 quick formated HDs installed and it wouldn't detect any of them not even with the 3.13.15 remix Ubuntu dvd kernel.

Well, once again on 14.10 :-)

I have done extensive research which brought me to a dead end when the only viable explanation I could find was that it had something to do with dmraid and raid leftovers even though I never used raid on any of the HDs.

Eventually I gave up on this and preferred to test various initrd.gz files from several distos and eureka! it appears that something changed in Trusty 14.04 to cause this issue since the previous releases seem to work just fine. Installed 13.10 via this initrd.gz: "http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/saucy-pro ... 4/netboot/" and then upgraded to 14.04 and then 14.10 using Xeno's guide (note: you can use the 10.1.3 mesa dri from trusty releases with your mesa fix as you don't need to go all the way to precise 12.04). Now if I can just get my audio back all will be wonderful.

@Srtest

interesting! I just have tried to install ubuntu 14.10 myself and just run into the same problem that ALL SATA disks are not recognized by the installer. I have 2 HDs installed -- a SSD (with only Amiga partioins) and another SATA HD that already contains an ancient debian installation. The interesting part here is, that when pausing the installation process by starting the installer-shell, you easily *can* mount all SATA partitons manually. Hence, the disks are recognized and all drivers/modules for recognizing the disks must have been loaded. Why the installer fails in this task is unknown to me. When starting manually the "disk-detect"-command, used by the installer some weird error messages appear:

"modules: No such file or directory
find: Nemo/: No such file or directory
cut: /proc/modules: No such file or directory
find: DVD: No such file or directory
find: A1-X1000: No such file or directory"

So, to me there is a bug in that command (-- which might simply use typical unix tools like 'cut' and 'find' to get the HD device IDs and maybe simply the quotation is erroneous?).

So if initrd.gz from 13.10 works, it might be worth for looking to that command-tool 'disk-detect" and replace that in initrd.gz of 14.10.

I might find the time to tackle the problem on the weekend (hopefully), dunno yet.

On the other hand, I am trying to install linux just because I have some sound problems on AmigaOS and trying to verify the issue by using Linux. However, now you wrote that you have audio problems on Linux! :D That doesn't sound promising.

@ALL
Here question, I have. I hope someone can answer them:

1) Can someone tell me what modules are needed in Linux for getting the X1000 onboard-sound working?
2) How is the device name in Linux?
3) How is the name reported in tools like "alsamixer"
4) Does the digital S/P-DIF output work in Linux?

Thanks!

Indeed the scripts for detecting the hardware have been slightly different in
intrd.gz between ubuntu 13.3.2 and 14.10.

So, I exchanged those scripts in 14.10 by those in 13.3.2 and rebuild the ramdisk image by hand again. In addition I included the kernel modules of vmlinux-3.18
(just in case, some have to be loaded by hand during installation) and finally, I could install ubuntu 14.10 with vmlinux-3.18 and that modified ramdisk image initrd.gz.

I am not sure if those minor changes helped me to install ubuntu 14.10 or if it was the installation of my second GFX card Radeon 9200. Nevertheless, installation went exactly as described here (however, installation was done via my Radeon 9200, not via my RadeonHD 4850):

http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... 337#p26059

To be precise, I used the image found here:

http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... =30#p30799

Problems discovered after installation:

* X-server does not work out of the box and when trying to start it manually, I get several error messages. Howver, by ignoring them all, there was eventually XFCE on my screen.

* X-server and terminal was running on Radeon 9000

* No sound on digital or analog output. I think, the onboard drivers are missing and sound is not configured probably.
QUESTION: what is the name of the module need for driving the onboard sound chip?

* some more crashing application here and there. Howerver, I think that was all related to non-existing sound device.

Feel free to test the attached initrd.gz file and try to install ubuuntu 14.10 yourself!

Let me know how u get sound out of your Nemo board! :D

Cheers,
nexus

P.S. I could not attach the initrd-file. Maybe 18 MB are too large?
If u are interested in testing the installation write a PM to me.
I can email you the ramdisk image then.
