A small update

Post by Srtest »

Well an update from a user's perpective:

1. The new Firefox finally left behind the heavy chain on its neck (TB also) and feels kinda light again and effective. Grab it while you can - version 35, either from a system update or from here (launchpad): https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-s ... ld/6709836. Important - you need to update also your locale file and global menu if you use it, if not by a regular deb update because of dependencies than with the sudo dpkg -i command.

2. I regret to inform that for people suffering from the netboot installation not detecting their hd setup that it remains in 15.04 Vivid Vervet so I guess it goes again from 13.10 to whatever is available (be it official or unofficial: http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... =20#p30294).

3. **** Warning!!! **** do not fiddle with the new 10.4.x mesa as it obliterated my installation I couldn't even get to start X. Not with it or with the newer Radeon/ati driver or xserver update. I hope it doesn't mean anything for the future.

* An interesting read about future/past compatibility with Radeon and and Power computing that fits the mid-level user/reader: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthre ... -20-Kernel

** Very Important!! => Always make sure you have the latest updates via system update before you issue such a procedure as overwriting dependencies and it always prefered to accomplish with Synaptic or the deb package manager.

Thanks a lot for your very good hints. :-) I updated Firefox on Lubuntu 12.04.5 and ubuntu Mate 14.10.

From the discussion I ended up not knowing if I understatnd or not based on my own uses and opinions. I don't get this distinction between wrapper and "native". They all want the vaapi as native while for me whatever wrapper they used in 14.10 gave great results so who cares? Is open source a magic word? If under all the bells and whistles the native vaapi comes from AMD then what's so free about it and "native"?

Hi guys,
I just tested to update Firefox on my old AEon Linux LUbuntu.

Update failed because many dependencies failed and now, Firefox doesn't launch anymore (neither Arora). I'm stuck with no Browser on my Linux system.

Code: Select all

Thank you for the tips, unfortunately, no changes. Still the same missing or outdated package.

Even Synaptic graphical repository is broken now (I issued the recommended command to fix the catalogue)

I will surrender Ubuntu, I prefered MintPPC GUI.

I wanted to reinstall my old MintPPC11 but it is older than AEon Ubuntu, could you say me if a more recent PPC distro exist ?

Thank you

Did you solve the broken repository with the following steps?
  1. Start Synaptic
  2. Menu Edit - Fix Broken Packages
  3. After that you can install Firefox 35 with:

    Code: Select all

    sudo apt-get update

    Code: Select all

    sudo apt-get install firefox

Good luck!

Thank you,
I made a mistake, it was not Synaptic that complained but the Package Manager.

I solved my problem by issuing
"apt-get remove firefox*"

Then, I was able to install all the waiting updates (126 updates, 256mb)

and
"apt-get install firefox"
"apt-get install firefox-locale-fr*"
"apt-get install firefox-globalmenu*"

finally it works !

BUT, do you know another recent PPC distro nt based on Ubuntu ?

Thank you

I apologize for leading you to this complication. I made a logical leap. Of course before you use the forceful way of dpkg -i command to get over dependencies you should always find out what they actually are (package updater), so you'll be prepared and have the relevent files. I guess not everyone do this stuff after they made sure their setup is updated and on Linux it is a lot more important, for the same thing happened with the 10.4.x Mesa although a little differentlly because an update of the Mesa's api and dri files made it imposiblle. Glad you worked around it. Give us reports if for you it works better like it did for me.

No problem, it's my own fault. I'm learning :D

Yes, it seems faster than before but still heavy to load.
But it's very subjective because I don't use Linux a lot on my X1000.
