I spent way too much time this weekend on trying to find out why Vivid Vervet 15.04 does not startup on the
X1000 after an installation from scratch,
Thank you for testing!
nexus wrote: So, I wonder if those people using successfully "Vivid Vervet 15.04" after upgrading from an earlier distribution have configured a separate "/home" or "Swap" partition?
Not really successful. I need "rw" in the boot arguments. I don't have a separate "/home" or "Swap" partition.
nexus wrote: In the end, 15.04 works but I do not recommend it to use on the X1000.
It's only for testing. But testing is very important.
nexus wrote: If you have contact to the ubuntu/linux powerpc guys, it would make things easier for us if they could apply the patches done for the X1000 to the official powerpc source tree :)
You could post your experiences directly to the powerpc guys in their forum: ubuntuforums.org.

Thank you for your effort. I'm really appreciative.

Cheers,

Hi,

I have figured out some interesting things. Ubuntu will switch from the init system 'upstart' to 'systemd'. On our systems is 'upstart' the default init system. I activated systemd with 'apt-get install systemd-sysv'. It boots faster and the problem with mounting the root partition is gone. I don't need the boot arguments 'rw' for the init system 'systemd'. But I have a problem with my MATE desktop. If I start my ubuntu MATE 15.04 with systemd then the 'mate-settings-daemon' doesn't work correctly. I changed back to upstart.

Cheers,

Christian

Yes, by not installing "plymoth", also "upstart" is removed due to some dependency issues. That was the reason, why I had to install "systemd" instead. The startup with "systemd" is/should be slower than upstart, I think. However, due to this problem of being stuck when having to bind a partition to "/root", "systemd" is the better choice to go because I do not know if it is a good choice to not have a swap partition :)

I have monitored the swap partition on my X1000 while playing a DVD and watching a youtube vid, playing some music, and playing a game and swap never got used. Tempfs (and I think ramfs) do the same thing as swap until most of the useable ram is gone.

As a result I have stopped even making a swap partition and when doing a new install I mark any swap partition on any other drive as 'do not use'.

So just crank up the system monitor and see if it gets used.

Srtest tested the RC1 of kernel 4.00 with Lubuntu 15.04 yesterday.

Quote Srtest:
Kernel 4.00 RC1 boots ok, although somewhat slower than the blazing 3.19. Here is a desktop pic. You can see the nice colors on GLX gears test, VLC playback and STK while there are wrong colors on the FF start page. Strange isn't it?

@Srtest: Thank you for testing!

I also test Debian Sid PowerPC. Iceweasel 33.1-1 has right colors. Unfortunately iceweasel 35.0.1-1 is only for amd64 and i386 available currently.

The daily ISOs never worked for me I don't understand the purpose.

I have just updated to the most recent Lubuntu developmental and it broke Open GL video on VLC for me which I could only get back after switching to directfb. This practically crippled hq video playback.

If I were to rate the video playback of recent Lubuntus it would go something like this: 14.04>14.10>15.04 => give and take fluctuations between recent kernels and focusing on compatibility.

OK. Please post this problem on the google+ page of the Lubuntu developers: https://plus.google.com/communities/102737741860934586009.

I've noticed I missed it replaced the Mesa package so again performed your procudere and video works again, although the performance with the Prometheus trailer is worse than on AOS. The worst performance of recent Lubuntus, which also can be related to the recent upgrade of the Mesa parts while still using your old files.

* Kernel 4.00 RC1
