Kernel 4.00 (3.20)

Post by xeno74 »

Hi All,

I'd like to start the testing phase for the future kernel 4.00 (3.20). We don't know which version number the new kernel will have. There is a voting about the new version number on Linus Torvalds' Google Plus site.

Link: https://plus.google.com/+LinusTorvalds/posts/jmtzzLiiejc

Quote Linus Torvalds:

So, I made noises some time ago about how I don't want another 2.6.39 where the numbers are big enough that you can't really distinguish them.

We're slowly getting up there again, with 3.20 being imminent, and I'm once more close to running out of fingers and toes.

I was making noises about just moving to 4.0 some time ago. But let's see what people think.

So - continue with v3.20, because bigger numbers are sexy, or just move to v4.0 and reset the numbers to something smaller?
Please vote!

Anyway the merge window have been opened this week and it were added a lot of new source code for the kernel 4.00 (3.20).

For example source code for PowerPC: http://www.phoronix.com and 3.20 POWER pull request

I created a new patch for the kernel 4.00 (3.20) today.

I know what you are saying about the numbers.

Since I started working with 3.14 I quit using numbers to keep track. Now I use names and I even rename the vmlinux executable while in the source directory. My latest kernel is 'Lucy2" and it's so much easier to just end the boot line with cf0:Lucy2.

So, just develop some system of your own and nevermind about what is 'acceptable' by others. :roll:

I had compiled the GIT version of kernel 4.00 (3.20) and then I tested it. It boots without any problems with Debian Sid.

But unfortunately X11 doesn't start on ubuntu MATE 15.04.

And here is the download of the kernel 4.00 (3.20) alpha 1: vmlinux-4.00.0-alpha1-AMIGA_one_X1000.tar.bz2

PLEASE test the alpha1.

"But unfortunately X11 doesn't start on ubuntu MATE 15.04."

For me, it boots well under MATE 15.04.
Sound, 3D work.
The only very annoying problem is that my network doesn't work anymore (OK with 3.19 kernel)
EDIT : PA6T_ETH embedded network card works well, I only have problem with my RTL8139 network card

I released the alpha2 today. It were added a lot of source code: https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/log/. I tested the alpha2 with Fedora 17 and Debian Sid today.

Linus Torvalds has yet to reveal whether Linux 3.20 will be re-branded as Linux 4.0, but it seems the community at least really wants this version bump to happen.

Last week on Linus Torvalds' Google+ page he polled the community over Linux 3.20 vs. 4.0. Torvalds has yet to say what version he's going with for this next kernel -- it will probably be revealed next weekend when he's closing the merge window and bumping for -rc1 -- but it seems overwhelmingly that people want this Linux 3.20 to 4.0 jump.

My RTL8139 network device had disappeared from Ubuntu (I don't know why), nothing in Control Center / Network Prefs.

1) I unplugged/replugged the wire => freeze under Kernel 4.00

2) I readded it in the Control Center / Network Prefs => freeze under Kernel 4.00

3) rebooted under 3.19 => OK

4) rebooted under 4.00 (alpha 1 and alpha 2) => stall at bootup. Tested 3-4 times.

This 4.00 (alpha 1 and 2) is not very good for me ;)
