Ubuntu Remix Install for R7 250x Cards

Post by jdupuis »

Hello,

I have the Ubuntu Remix CD I bought and want to install. The video will not allow the boot up to continue. I am connected via HDMI to the Radeon R7 250x. 1900 x 1200 resolution. I was wondering if there is a work around to be able to install Ubuntu Remix on my x1000 using this disc. I cannot find an updated ISO for this issue.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Could you try it with the new kernel 4.0.7, please?

Please boot it with these following commands:

With the USB flash drive:

Code: Select all

CFE> ramdisk -addr=0x24000000 -fs=iso atapi0.1:casper/powerpc64/initrd
CFE> setenv bootargs "root=/dev/ramdisk file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper quiet ro splash --"
CFE> boot -elf -noints -fatfs usbdisk0:vmlinux-4.0.7
With the CF card:

Code: Select all

CFE> ramdisk -addr=0x24000000 -fs=iso atapi0.1:casper/powerpc64/initrd
CFE> setenv bootargs "root=/dev/ramdisk file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper quiet ro splash --"
CFE> boot -elf -noints -fatfs cf0:vmlinux-4.0.7
Thanks in advance. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,

Christian

Hi Christian,

I have a USB 16 GB thumbdrive. I use Windows 7 and Mavericks on my Mac. I have tried formatting and keep getting "Filesystem not recognized command status = -29"
So this is my first go at Linux Install on my x1000. I do have a 16GB CF card installed on Nemo already. I'm sure I'm not getting the formatting correct on the USB Thumdrive. Some advice please. Mavericks allows MS DOS and Ext2 format and Windows will let me use NTFS or FAT32. What am I missing? Sure it's simple.

Thank you.

Cheers! John

Hello again Christian,

Okay I got the USB correctly formatted using Fat 2 GB. The Ubuntu Remix 12.04 boot splash did load! However, No HDMI Signal on my monitor and the monitor went into stand-by and the DVD Rom drive stopped after a bit. Goes no further. Better than the disc alone would do. Where to from here?

Cheers!

Hi John,

Sorry because of this issue with the HDMI output. Could you try the DVI output, please?

Thanks in advance.

Try hitting Ctl-alt F1 - there may be an error printed. if so hit ctl-alt-F7 and see if the desktop appears.

This works for my copy with the 4.0.7 kernel. maybe it will work for you.

Thanks Christian.

Work night shift so sorry for late response. I'll give it a shot. I have a DVI to VGA adapter. Unfortunately my monitor has the new DVI connector.

Darren, I'll give give your method a shot as well.

I'm what you call a determinate sort of feller as not to let something so small kick me around. I'll report my findings on both methods. AOS 4.1 FE is running great!! So I'm almost there. Got an 80 GB IDE HD on LUN 0 just waiting for Linux.

Cheers!

Hello,

Negative results on both methods. I still loose video signal after UBUNTU boot splash finishes flashing loading dots. As I mentioned, that's still further than with Live Remix DVD alone. If this helps, my monitor Make is ASUS and the Model is ProArt PA248Q ISP Resolution is 1920 x 1200 w/ Display Port, HDMI, VGA, DVI-D and, of course, Radeon R7 250x GPU.

Cheers!!

Hello again Christian!

I know that the Radeon R7 250x issue needs to be resolved by testing and I will continue. However I would like to add Linux to my system. I have the following GPU options I can order to maybe get me going.
Can you confirm the compatibility? Which would be my best option? Would I be able to have both R7 250x and one of these installed together to install and run Ubuntu along with testing the R7 250x?

XFX AMD Radeon HD 5450 2 GB DDR3

Asus ATI Radeon HD 6450 1 GB DDR3

MSI AMD Radeon HD 6450 2 GB DDR3

Your thoughts, please.
Thanks,

John

Hi John,

In my point of view the Radeon HD 6870 is the best graphics card for Linux PPC.

But I think your graphics cards above should work without any problems. You could install both R7 250x and one of these above together. But you need a special xorg.conf to configure one of the two graphics cards for Linux.

Cheers,

Christian
