Hi All,

As an update I worked out the error message problem. It seems that even though I entered the bootargs parameter into cfe it had a different entry already and wasn't overwriting it.

I have sorted that, and linux boots to a point, but no x-windows loads up - just a flashing cursor in the top left off the screen. Note that I followed the instructions to install Standard, LUbuntu and XUbuntu desktops as per the working config mentioned.

Do I need anything else? I saw a patch file mentioned in this thread, do I need it and if so, where does it need to go?

I can get to the logon terminal as below. When I login and try to run x I get errors as below:
error running x-windows under ubuntu 16.04rc4
error running x-windows under ubuntu 16.04rc4
Any help appreciated.

Did you try Zappa's xorg.conf?

Yes I did and it worked - thank you. :-)

rc4 doesn't work for me still, but rc3 now works.

If X11 doesn't work after the installation then try zappa2009's xorg.conf files.

Download: X.org.conf.zip

Please rename xorg.conf.radeon to xorg.conf and then copy it to /etc/X11.

Good luck! :-)

I couldn't resist trying this.

Everything seemed to progress according to instructions, but when I tried to boot it I got screenful after screenful of colorful reports like the ones I got when I tried to install and run 15.10.
A couple toward the end were FAILED's: Failed to start Clean up any mess leftr by Od[??]-up
See 'system[?]1s status dna(?)=clean.service' for details. My photo of this page isn't all that legible.

But then something new happened. The screen went dark and then a little window opened with
The system is running in low-graphics mode
Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself [OK]
Clicked OK and tried some of the options: "Try running with default graphical mode
"Reconfigure graphics
"Troubleshoot the error
"Exit to console login"

"Trouble shoot" brought up a long list of stuff. I attach photos of two pages of that stuff toward the end.

I tried booting again today. Considerable difference. Not quite one screenful of the colorful "Starting"/"Started"/"Reached" and then the screen went black, then there came a green disc with some kind of design in it, and the five little circles under it that I am used to watching change color when I boot 12.04.

That didn't last long before changing to the "low-graphics mode" warning put in an appearance, but today "OK" got me an unusable list of (the same as yesterday) options: mouse and keyboard didn't work.

I'm starting to wonder if there is just something wrong with my X1000.

Spectre660 released a new installation initial ramdisk for installing Ubuntu 16.04 with the stable longterm kernel 4.1.18.

New: It should copy the 4.1.18 modules and Luigi's Xorg.conf during the installation.

Download: initrd-4.1.18-1.ubuntu16.04-ppc64-2.gz (I suggest to download it with a right click on the link and then with the menu point "Save target as" or something like this.)

PLEASE test it.

@Spectre660: Many many thanks for your new installation initial ramdisk. I appreciate it very much. :-)

the net installer some time fails when you made a new partition table.I loose all the day for understand this ... after i understand ... make new table ... force reboot , and all working right in the next try installation
Luigi,

Many thanks for this hint. I think you're right. Maybe this is the problem. Sometimes a user installs it in an existing partition and it works without any problems and sometimes a user creates a partition and forgets to reboot the X1000 and it doesn't work. It could be. Good idea! :-)

Cheers,

I had to do it from 12.04 -- 16.04's /media was empty when I ran the terminal after all the text messages, and I couldn't access either cf0: or my thumb drive -- but I am delighted to say it worked! I am doing this from Mate 16.04.

All kinds of weird stuff getting here, including an alert that said there was a system problem and offered to report it. That came up at least twice, but finally a real graphics screen! Thanks!

I hope it works again tomorrow, when I have time to look at it.
