So, two questions:
1. Does this look right?
Code: Select all
bart@Amigaone:~$ df -h /dev/sdb2
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
devtmpfs 979M 0 979M 0% /dev
Surely I have done something wrong. "Used 0"? Also, I get the same results for a flaky MATE on my SSD which surely should be different.
2. Would I be able to copy to a partition, or would it have to be an empty drive, as when I copied this current img?
1. Please post the output of
lsblk.
2. Yes, it's possible to copy your ubuntu MATE partition to a SSD drive with a partition with the same size.

Oops! I was sure that was what I did, above. When I try the
df -h/lsblk[ from your earlier post, I get
df: invalid option -- '/'
I took that to mean I should leave a space. And googling
lsblk led me to believe I should use the name of the partition the MATE to be copied was on, namely /dev/sdb2. Please explain further.
2. Yes, it's possible to copy your ubuntu MATE partition to a SSD drive with a partition with the same size.
Same size or larger? It might be hard to set up a partition to
exactly the same size.

Please try

Yes, to set up a larger partition is better.

Thanks. So that is what the "/" meant!
Code: Select all
bart@Amigaone:~$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sdb 8:16 0 931.5G 0 disk
├─sdb1 8:17 0 100M 0 part
└─sdb2 8:18 0 488.3G 0 part /
bart@Amigaone:~$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 481G 7.5G 449G 2% /
devtmpfs 979M 0 979M 0% /dev
tmpfs 980M 360K 980M 1% /dev/shm
tmpfs 980M 9.4M 971M 1% /run
tmpfs 5.0M 4.0K 5.0M 1% /run/lock
tmpfs 980M 0 980M 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
cgmfs 100K 0 100K 0% /run/cgmanager/fs
tmpfs 196M 36K 196M 1% /run/user/1002
Do I need to add up all the Used amounts to come up with a minimum size for the of= partition? Actually I can spare a whole lot more than that.

No, that's a 1 TB rotary, the one I emptied to successfully copy the MATE img to.
The SSD is
/dev/sdc:
Code: Select all
sdc 8:32 0 465.8G 0 disk
├─sdc1 8:33 0 42.9G 0 part
├─sdc2 8:34 0 50.8G 0 part
└─sdc3 8:35 0 372.1G 0 part
I'm not sure what the partitions are. GParted says sdc1 is red-disk "!" unknown, nothing used. sdc2 is ext4, 50.74 Gib with 14.27 GiB used.
Neither of these first two has a label or a flag.
sdc3 is another red-disk "!" but ext4, labeled "Ubuntu_16.04," 372.11 GiB of which 4.48 is used. I think this was one of my MATE failures.

Bart,
What do you think about to remove all the partitions on your SSD disk and then copy your working ubuntu MATE partition with dd to the SSD disk?
Cheers,
Christian

I wonder, Christian, does Ubuntu have an equivalent of Amiga's NVGetVar, a way to look at CFE?
When I looked at CFE during my next boot, I found out that /dev/sdc2 on the SSD is my working Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and /sdc3 is MATE, probably the one I copied over from my UBS stick. I don't use 12.04 any more, except in emergencies, and though it boots fine and has all kind of goodies lying around on the disktop, I can't really get on the SSD MATE -- apparently the User/Password combination is no longer "Amigaone/amigaone." This could be a good chance for me to review how to fix lost passwords, but what I think I will do instead is dump that MATE and see if I can copy the up-to-date one to that space. Maybe I won't have to delete the 12.04 partition?
I'll probably make some mistakes on the way; I'm not positive it can be done, but I'm gonna experiment.
But on second thought, it seems to me that even if I empty the SSD of everything, that's only 465.8G to copy sdb's 488.3G into! What are the chances that I can make sdb smaller with GParted before I copy? I don't think MATE really takes up that much room.
Bart

Everything but one thing seems to have come out fine. I reduced the size of the working MATE /dev/sdb2 partition to about 10% of its original monster size. I tried to Quit/Cancel while it still said "checking and repairing file system," thinking maybe files get scattered here and there and they won't necessarily be saved even in a new space considerably larger than that reported as "used," but too late. It was already shrunk. So I proceeded to copy it to the newly formatted /dev/sdc3, using GParted instead of "cp -a ..." or "dd -R ..." or whatever, and it seems to have worked OK to the extent that I can launch the /sdc3 MATE which looks and acts just like the /sdb2 one.
For some reason, the fact that both partitions have the same UUID doesn't seem to hurt. Maybe because /sdb2 has an additional PARTUUID that /sdc3 lacks? I have been unable so far to change the /sdc3 UUID with "uuidgen" and "tune2fs /dev/sdc3 -U 'uuid.'" Terminal relays the complaint, "... couldn't find valid filesystem superblock ..." Meanwhile, "sudo fsck /dev/sdc3" insists that partition is "clean" and doesn't offer to help.
I wonder if that cloned UUID matter will become a problem down the road? I'm next going to time how long booting the two MATEs takes, and if /sdc3 is really faster, that's the one I'll use until I do run into any problems.
Actually I should have had it timed by now. I've been bouncing back and forth among the two MATEs and 12.04 all afternoon, to have whatever I needed to work on come up unmounted. Color me pooped.
