Hi All,

Is it possible to use a Radeon HD 5XXX card for Linux PPC with 3D acceleration in the second PCIe 16x slot? For example a R7 250 for OS4.1 (Warp3D) and a HD5450 for Linux (Mesa).

A cheap Sapphire Radeon HD5450 for $36.40 for example.

Hi Christian!

I boought the 6670 card, if you recal our post some time ago. Room? I could put it in, however, it would be very very close to the R7 250x cooling fans. I could try, though. My Asus monitor has VGA available. I could use my DVI to VGA adapter for the 6670. Would this config work? Also, Do you think that would hinder R7 250x cooling being that close?
My Asus PA248Q monitor is capable of video switching - Display Port, DVI, HDMI and VGA. Just concerned about blocking R7 250x cooling fans.

Cheers!!

Hi! Caught my myself here. Not sleeping well and busy days at work.

Yes, the 5450 would be my solution. I tried the 6670 and did not like the video performance under AOS4.1FE so I reverted back to the R7 250x. That being said, I will pick up one of the Radeon HD5450 cards. It is worthy to note that Ubuntu Remix worked fine with the 6670. I should be able to put 5450 in with the R7 250x.

Thanks Christian!

Hi John,

Many thanks for your answer. I use the Sapphire Radeon HD5450 in my A1222 and I am very satisfied with this card. I am looking forward to getting your test results. :-)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you as well.

After the Christmas Rush, I'm looking at the XFX ATI Radeon HD 5450 card. $29.00. Not bad. I should be able to fit it in with the R7 250x and use the VGA on the 5450 for Linux. This will allow me to switch Video from DVI (AOS4.1) to VGA (Linux) with my monitor. I will start with the Ubuntu Remix 12.04 first. You can bet I'll have questions about (tweaking). In the meantime, AOS is serving well. My Mac, obviously being my primary computer. Hoping Linux can migrate me away just a little. If worse comes to worse, I can always put the 6670 back in. It lags a little in AOS4.1 performance. Enjoy the Holidays!

Cheers!!

This would be a fantastic solution for all Warp3D users who want to use Linux with 3D acceleration as well. :-)

Absolutely.

Christian, How would a XFX AMD Radeon 5450 2GB GDDR3 handle? Also, the Asus R7 250x 2 slot monster would have to be moved down to the next slot in my x1000 putting the 5450 in the first slot. Would that be a drastic change for WB Intuition in AOS? I would not think I would have to make tweaks in AOS with the 5450 in addition to the R7 250x installed, should I? Just wanting to know what I'm getting into. Trying to weasel my way to another Christmas Gift. ;) Your thoughts.

Hi John,

Unfortunately I don't have any experiences about using two PCIe graphics cards. I think you are the first who try such configuration. Many thanks for that. If it works than it would be a great solution.

Thanks,

Christian

Hi Christian!

I really do not want to be the first. Nemo is hard to come by right now at AmigaKit. I have a feeling that 2 GPU's would create an addressing conflict and/or power drain or something very undesirable.
The XFX Radeon HD 6670 that I have, may just need to be put to use. I am no longer using HDMI for the x1000. I am using DVI. DVI may give me better results as I was using HDMI at the time I first installed the 6670. I have an Empty 1 TB SATA HD and CF Card installed. I will install the 6670 card and 1 TB SATA. Perform First Contact Configuration, fresh install AOS4.1FE and install Ubuntu Remix in the Unallocated hard drive space. I will start with the Kernel from Ubuntu Remix DVD and move up from there. I think I feel better doing this. I'll start working on it over the next few days. I'll stay in touch.
If something can go wrong, it probably will, especially if I try to install two PCIe Graphics cards on the Nemo. :o

Thanks,

John

Hi Christian!

Great! Learned a lot today. Booting up Ubuntu Remix as I write. Radeon HD 6670 works fine. Using DVI I'm running AOS4.1 just fine as well. Tried booting with the Batch line from instruction sheet. No Joy. Just scrolled down to Boot Linux Install CD. Bear with me 'cause I'm not good with command line and such. So the CFE is already set up from AmigaKit - got it!
So HDMI is out of the question and as far as the R7 250x - I put it in the 6670 bag and box for now and in the cabinet for later date. I'm working on the formatting of the CF Card. Thanks for the input. It's the simple stuff that can kick you in the butt, right? I'm sure I'll have update questions and kernel update questions later. Thanks again for the moral support!

Cheers!!
