Kernel 4.5

Image Linux kernel 4.5 testing

It's snowy weather in Germany and the merge window for 4.5 is now open so I have time to test the latest kernel updates. :-) A lot of updates were added for the kernel 4.5 yesterday. Thereby I released the first Alpha for testing today. I successfully tested the Alpha1 with Debian Sid, ubuntu MATE 16.04, and with Fedora today.

Hi All,

Darren solved the problem with the P.A. Semi Ethernet with the kernel config option PPC_PASEMI_IOMMU_DMA_FORCE. We don't need the source code for the P.A. Semi Ethernet in the Nemo patch anymore. I removed all these source code in the Nemo patch and then I activated the option CONFIG_PPC_PASEMI_IOMMU_DMA_FORCE in the kernel config.
After compiling and booting the Alpha2, the P.A. Semi Ethernet works without any problems.

@Darren: Many thanks for your help.

Download: vmlinux-4.5-alpha2-AmigaONE_X1000.tar.gz

In addition it includes some new git merge updates for the kernel 4.5. (https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/log/)

Cheers,

Christian

The PowerPC updates for the kernel 4.5 were added to the Linux Git on Friday night. I created the Alpha4 with these updates yesterday.

This constant attention to improving Linux on the X1000 is very impressive.
A few years ago, I was really negative about Linux on the Amiga, but as time has gone on I see the need for it more and more. [insert usual AmigaOS development comment] ;)

I wish I knew more about Linux, cos I just put an IDE HDD into my X1000 and would like to try a distro.
Is there a beginners step by step guide to installing Linux on the X1000? Is there a distro to use?

Apologies for the very basic questions, but I am truly clueless with regards to NG Amiga Linux.

@Xeno74

Tried for the first time your kernel 4.5.

4.5 rc4 doesn't boot on my X1000 (R7-250X), 4.4 worked fine.

Black screen just after that :

Thank you for testing the Alpha4. Could you please test the Alpha1? Maybe PPC_PASEMI_IOMMU_DMA_FORCE is the problem.

@ddni

Thank you for your interest! We have some instructions for installing Linux on the A1-X1000.
If you have an older AMD Radeon HD graphics card (HD6xxx or older) then I recommend you to buy the A-EON Live Remix DVD.

Link: http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com
At long last there is a simple and easy way to try out Linux on your Next-Generation AmigaONE X1000 without resorting to entering long lines of unintelligible code. You can run Ubuntu Remix in Live mode straight from the DVD, or if you wish, can install it to your hard disk drive alongside your AmigaOS 4 installation with the simple step-by-step installation guide. The Live Ubuntu Remix DVD is the culmination of many months of work by the A-EON Technology Linux Support Team, a small, dedicated group of international AmigaONE X1000 beta testers and owners from the UK, Eire, Germany, Australia & New Zealand. Not only is Ubuntu now easy to setup and use on the AmigaONE X1000, the custom Linux Kernel includes full 3D hardware support for series 4xxx, 5xxx and 6xxx RadeonHD graphics cards. Also included on the DVD are the necessary development tools to enable you to compile your own kernel. Five unique A1-X1000 Linux Desktop backgrounds have been especially created for Ubuntu Remix DVD along with SuperTuxKart 0.8 AltiVec™, a free 3D kart racing game which has been customised for the AmigaONE X1000.

Selection of software included on the DVD plus access to thousands of additional free & commercial packages from the Ubuntu software centre:

Libre Office Productivity suite: Writer wordprocessor, Calc spreadsheet, Draw, Impress presentation and Math packages.
Internet: Firefox, Thunderbird Mail, Empathy Internet Messaging.
Utilities: Disk Utility, Terminal, Text editor, Calculator, Archive manager.
Graphics: GIMP Image Editor, Scribus DTP, Image & Document viewer. Shotwell Photo Manager.
Sound & Video: VLC player, MoviePlayer, Brasero Disk burner, Minitube player, Rythmn Box Music Player.
Games: SuperTuxKart, Neverputt, Gorky 17 Demo.
Developer Tools: Ubuntu One configure and manage your own free Ubuntu One cloud account.

If you would like a light weight Linux that is easy to install and well maintained I suggest LinuxMint.
I have been using it for about 3 years now and much prefer it to the heavier Ubuntus.
Of course you can load it up as heavy as you want after install.

You can go to Aeon site, login and download the Linux Install Guide PDF.
If you decide to try LinuxMint you will also need a net install CD.

Go here and download the debian-7.9.0-powerpc-netinst.iso and burn it to a CD

http://cdimage.debian.org/mirror/cdimag ... pc/iso-cd/

Or just download the iso and set it aside in case you change your mind. :-)

EDIT: Installed 4.5-A4 on LinuxMint and it works fine.

Many thanks for testing. It seems PPC_PASEMI_IOMMU_DMA_FORCE isn't the problem because the Alpha1 doesn't boot either.

I need some error messages. Is it possible to login via SSH? Maybe the Linux system works without display output. Could you send me the serial output?

I will compile the AMDGPU driver as kernel module for the Alpha5. Maybe this could solve the problem.

I recompiled 4.4rc8 with PPC_PASEMI_IOMMU_DMA_FORCE.... still works.
I also added V4L and now my webcam is working. :-)

Perhaps zzd10h could put his older card back in just to see if that is the problem.
