Good to hear John :-)

The glxgears FPS report look a little low compared to earlier versions. I presume 3D game like SuperTuxkart, Neverputt etc are working OK?

Hi Trevor!

I had a couple of questions for Christian after testing the booting of Kernels 4.6 rc6 and rc7. I have noticed the lower glxgears since putting my Asus Radeon HD R7 250X back in and taking the 6670 out. Ubuntu 12.04.05 glxgears dropped from the mid to high 5000 Frames range down to 564 Frames that I reported. Ubuntu Mate 16.04 has increased from the low 300 Frames to the mid 500 Frames range. Testing SuperTuxkart included in Ubuntu 12.04 earlier this afternoon reveals that it is very slow to startup and choppy. I have not downloaded and installed the version of SuperTuxkart Christian recommended in 16.04. YouTube in both 12.04 and 16.04 play in low definition without fullscreen. I have chosen, though, to stay with the R7 250X in order to use AOS Enhancer Software Package and check booting of the new Kernels.
This is the first time I have been able to boot the 12.04 DVD with the R7 250X since I've owned my X1000, so I am happy about that since it was part of my original AmigaKit order. :) I will work on doing further testing of SuperTuxkart as I keep going and include results.

Cheers!!

John

Hi John,

Hardware 3D acceleration isn't available for Southern Islands based Radeon cards. Alex Perez and another developer actively trying to fix the 3D problem with the Southern Islands based Radeon cards.

Hi Christian,

Thank you. I hope I was of some assistance with testing the newer Kernels. As I realize there isn't 3D acceleration yet, I am glad to be able to boot and use the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS DVD and have bootable Linux installs with the Radeon HD R7 250X. I appreciate your support and you giving me the opportunity to test the recent 4.6 Kernel revisions using my Southern Islands card. Ubuntu Mate 16.04 is working a lot better 4.6 rc7. Thanks.

Cheers!!

Linus Torvalds released the final version of kernel 4.6 today.

New:
Many many many thanks for testing the alphas and release candidates. :-)

It also includes:
  • KVM_BOOK3S_64_PR
Support running guest kernels in virtual machines on processors without using hypervisor mode in the host, by running the guest in user mode (problem state) and emulating all privileged instructions and registers.
This is not as fast as using hypervisor mode, but works on machines where hypervisor mode is not available or not usable, and can emulate processors that are different from the host processor, including emulating 32-bit processors on a 64-bit host.
  • Mac-on-Linux support
  • network support for AROS hosted
  • support for 4 serial ports
  • Bluetooth USB dongle support
  • kernel tracing with ftrace
  • ubuntu MATE 15.04, 15.10, 16.04 LTS, and 16.10 support
  • Debian 8 support
  • Btrfs support
  • systemd support
  • Wacom Intuos/Graphire tablet support (USB)
  • Support for the new interrupt handling
  • Boot by UUID or disk label with an initrd
  • Support for the Power Statistics tool
  • Linux kernel icon for OS4.1 by Tommysammy

Hi Christian,

4.6 Final. Ubuntu 16.04 (Julian's SI image upgraded) Radeon HD R7 250X. Downloaded on my Mac Mini to my USB first. 4.6 Final booted fine but with USB 1-10 error with patience it continued to boot to login screen. Had to wait for keyboard and mouse to activate, again, patience. Copied Kernel to CF Card. Kernel and 16.04 booted as normal. Logged out then Logged back in. As expected with the R7 250X I can play YouTube videos in Standard Definition no expanded screen fine. The pictures speak.

All system functions are good. No need in me attempting SuperTuxKart just yet. Glxgears are well above 500 frames, still to slow and Southern Islands are in work. I am not a gamer so I think think all is good for now. I'm running the Released 16.04 and 4.6 Final with my R7 250X! How great is that?! :)

Cheers!!

John

I tested a lot of things with the kernel 4.6.1 and it works very well.

Test results:
  1. Hardware 3D acceleration works with an AMD Radeon HD6870 (tested with DOOM 3 and SuperTuxKart 0.8.1-2)
  2. Sound works (MP3 files, web radio etc)
  3. LAN works (Realtek RTL-8139)
  4. WLAN works (FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N)
  5. "PR" KVM works (QEMU guest: Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger)
  6. Compiz works
  7. YouTube HD videos work with ViewTube
  8. Internal CF card works
  9. pas_shutdown works
