Thanks for the update. Maybe by the time I had recovered MATE graphically, I had forgotten I wanted to "hold" the retro version.

In any event, I have now updated to the latest version available for MATE on this machine, without the "unhold" instruction, and it works just fine. But I will certainly retain all your advice in my notes.
