Done. Success! 8-)

Great job Christian. That's worth at least 4 'Ata Boy's

Posted from Moz-FF on Ubuntu-mate on /sda4.

I did not know if the kernel you supplied would work without the RAMDISK so I used my All-in-One 4.8rc4, and besides, the RAMDISK is now on a ext4 and CFE does not like it.

Anyway, its working.
Hi Mechanic,

Many thanks for testing! :-) I was able to install ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 with the new script from the live DVD too. It also works without the RAMDISK. I successfully tested the installed ubuntu MATE with the stable longterm kernel 4.1.32 without the RAMDISK. I will integrate the new install script to the new live DVD ISO.

Thanks,

Christian

Hi All,

I am uploading a new ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 live ISO with the new install script and with the kernel 4.7.3.

Pat told me, that the installer Ubiquity works with his X1000. It could be that my hardware configuration doesn't work with Ubiquity.

I decided to let the Ubiquity installer as the default installer. If Ubiquity doesn't work for you, then you can open the new install script via the command ubunu-install.

Cheers,

Christian

I got the probably not very wise idea of downloading it first and then trying to find out what to do with it later. I probably wouldn't have, had I known it was a five-hour download. Is there any safe way to change one's mind about downloading something?

Anyway, nice as it looked, it did not survive a reboot, so I think I will try to figure out in advance how I will burn it to a DVD and then perhaps download it again.

If you are using mozilla to download try clicking the down arrow over to the right and there should be a gadget at the end of the progress bar you can click to end it.

Use the program Brasero to burn it to DVD. If it's not on your computer use Synaptic to install it. Brasero is in the Sound & Video menu item.

That trick works with Firefox too. I just tested it with a much shorter download.

And I just installed Synaptic and looked up Brasero. It turns out that that one is already installed on my system.

So, tomorrow when I have more than five hours left in the day...

Thanks. Wish me luck.

@All

Please test the new live DVD.

You can boot the DVD with the following commands:

Code: Select all

CFE> ramdisk -addr=0x24000000 -fs=iso atapi0.1:casper/powerpc64/initrd.

Code: Select all

CFE> setenv bootargs "root=/dev/ramdisk file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-mate.seed boot=casper quiet ro splash --"

Code: Select all

CFE> boot -elf -noints -fs=iso atapi0.1:casper/powerpc64/vmlinux.
I'd like to know if it boots.

BTW, Julian successfully tested the installer script with his image on a USB stick yesterday.

Thanks,

Christian

Well, if you are reading this, that means I was able to boot my new DVD, and also to find my Hyperion password on the password list on my original HD install of MATE.

Started out with the old CFE nasty remark "Cannot find file casper/powerpc64/initrd" But although I remembered Christian's remark about needing a period (".") when I copied the boot command "... atapi0.1:casper/powerpc/vmlinux." to my notes, I missed it at the end of the ramdisk command. Now all is well, except it sure takes a big chunk of my remaining years to get from CFE to ubuntuMATE.

I always wonder why CFE has to read data 1024 times (twice) to reset DRQ. Why isn't it 0 in the first place, if it is supposed to be 0?

Welcome comes up looking different at first, and I had not realized that this is theoretically an install disk. Can I really install another instance of 16.04.1 on hard disk for upgrading to Yakety Yak? [Later, I decided to find out for myself, and tried running the install program figuring I could stop at any point. It dies immediately without doing anything. It also turns out that "restart" from the power button doesn't work. It gets to "Remove disk and hit Enter" and never gets beyond that point.]

Otherwise, apparently the only value to having the disk is as backup in case my working MATE crashes. I might be able to save data from it via this DVD install even if I can no longer boot the one I use now.

Anyway, very interesting experience. Thanks, Christian, for making it possible.
