Hi Kilaueabart,

Many thanks for testing. I am glad that you was able to boot the live DVD. :-)

If the default installer doesn't work for you, then you can open the new install script via the command ubunu-install but I think you don't need to install ubuntu MATE again because you have already installed it.
kilaueabart wrote: Otherwise, apparently the only value to having the disk is as backup in case my working MATE crashes. I might be able to save data from it via this DVD install even if I can no longer boot the one I use now.
Yes, that's right. After saving the data via the DVD, you can install it with ubunu-install again. ;-)
kilaueabart wrote: Anyway, very interesting experience. Thanks, Christian, for making it possible.
My pleasure. :-)

@All

Please test the DVD too.

Cheers,

Christian

Yes, I have 16.04 installed. (Is it 16.04.1? Not sure.) However, I would like to try upgrading to 16.10, and I don't want to take the chance of ruining the one I have working perfectly with lots of important files and applications on it. I have discovered that I have a real talent for messing up installations, so would like to make another 16.04 to work with.

Actually, I think I do have another 16.04 that doesn't work right, or at least I have a 16.10 that I tried with only limited success to upgrade from a different 16.04 install and I want to replace it with one that really works, just in case it is better than 16.04 in some ways.

kernel complains not being VLM and able to perform.

I see you have added some script

Does it solve the dilemma?

It's possible to add or modify icons on the live DVD desktop.

Create the directory Desktop in livecdtmp/edit/etc/skel/

Code: Select all

mkdir livecdtmp/edit/etc/skel/Desktop
I created the new launcher "Install Ubuntu MATE with the alternative script.desktop" and copy it to livecdtmp/edit/etc/skel/Desktop.

Content of the desktop launcher file:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Version=1.0
Name=Install Ubuntu MATE with the alternative script
Comment=Install this system permanently to your hard disk
Keywords=ubiquity;
Exec=mate-terminal --command ubuntu-install
Icon=ubiquity
Terminal=false
Categories=GTK;System;Settings;
NotShowIn=KDE;
X-Ayatana-Appmenu-Show-Stubs=False
Name[en_US]=Install Ubuntu MATE with the alternative script
Additionally I created a link to this forum on the MATE desktop.

Content:

Code: Select all

#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Terminal=false
Icon[en_US]=/usr/share/icons/Humanity/apps/64/gnome-help.svg
Name[en_US]=A-EON Linux support
Exec=firefox http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewforum.php?f=35
Name=A-EON Linux support
Icon=/usr/share/icons/Humanity/apps/64/gnome-help.svg

Just for info: Sometimes the DVD drive isn't connected to atapi0.1 but maybe to atapi0.0. With the CFE command show devices you can see on which device is your DVD drive connected.

Please test the stable kernel 4.7.10 with the live DVD.
