Kernel 4.9

Post by xeno74 »

Hi All,

The merge window is open. Here is the first alpha version of kernel 4.9. :-)

New:

- Phoronix articles, reviews and news stories covering Linux 4.9
- Linux Git log

Download: vmlinux-4.9-alpha1-AmigaONE_X1000.tar.gz

Please test the alpha1.

Thanks,

Christian

Hi All,

A lot of new source code has been added to the git for the future kernel 4.9 so here is the second alpha version of kernel 4.9. :-)

New:

- Phoronix articles, reviews and news stories covering Linux 4.9
- Linux Git log

Download: vmlinux-4.9-alpha2-AmigaONE_X1000.tar.gz

Could you please test the alpha2? I'd like to know if it works for you.

Thanks in advance,

Christian

Here is the alpha3 for testing.

Download: vmlinux-4.9-alpha3-AmigaONE_X1000.tar.gz

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE test the alphas. I need the results for fixing problems. I don't want to release a kernel with a lot of problems.

Hi All,

You can also test some alpha kernels without an installed Linux by booting the alphas with the latest ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 LTS live DVD. ;-)

Please test the alphas.

Thanks,

Christian

Hi All,

The Nemo patch gets smaller and smaller. Thanks to Darren.

Here is the new alpha5 with a very small Nemo patch because a lot of Nemo code is in the official kernel source code now. :-)

Download: vmlinux-4.9-alpha5-AmigaONE_X1000.tar.gz

Please test it. It's very important.

Thanks,

Christian

Hi All,

I am looking for a tester for testing the Linux 4.9 alpha kernels. Could you please test them. I cross compiled the kernels and I don't have the opportunity to test them here at the AmiWest.

Thanks,
Christian

I have tested the first and the most recent, both boot reliably, but I've noticed a few minor differences:

Yours shows version 4.9.0 - where are you getting the source from? Is shows 4.8 on my next tree.
UVD initialises correctly on yours, it doesn't on the ones I've tried to build.
The latest one doesn't show boot messages until later in the boot (mine have doing that for a while, I must investigate)
I see a small but steady stream of spurious interrupts.

Having said all they work fine - I have had no issues with them.
Well done!

Hi Darren,

Many thanks for testing. It seems that our testers haven't time to test the alphas currently. Maybe because of the AmiWest. I had a short time at the end of the AmiWest to show the new ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 live DVD and I was able to test the latest alpha of kernel 4.9.
The new live DVD has booted without any problems with a Radeon R9 graphics card. After that I tested it with the alpha5 of kernel 4.9. Unfortunately the alpha5 doesn't show the boot messages but we didn't wait a long time. We tested it with SliTaz too but we haven't seen any boot messages. We haven't had enough time to test the kernels because this X1000 was for presenting AmigaOS4.1.
You asked about the kernel version. I modified the version string to 4.9 in the Makefile.
The AmiWest was fantastic and exciting! Thanks to all for this great show.

Cheers,
Christian
