I have that burned and it is the DVD that boots, but ... cannot extract the newer TAR from GUI and rsync itxeno74 wrote:Hi Vox,
Ok. If I need more clearer approach:From a booted USB flash drive to /dev/sdb7 for example:
a) I have booted to Debian, downloaded and hopefully untarred the iso.
Can I directly DD IMG file to a empty SDB5 partition OR I need to install
it to USB (which I dont have large enough), boot from it and then rsync to SDB5
I might be demanding, but this wasnt clear enough for me.
Code: Select all
sudo dd if=MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.5.img of=/dev/sdb7
I am sorry to be wrong, my USB 2.x devices are slow to boot and access many files, and even USB 3.x devices would be fast only under Linux. All of them are slow compared to SSD, and I generally consider USB booting only when nothing else works and installs of OSs to and from USB as easy way to torture peopleUSB isn't slow. You only need a fast USB flash drive. I would recommend you to buy the SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 Flash Drive.
vox wrote: I have trouble unbzipping it, where can I get clean .img or tarred (.tar.bz2 doesnt work for me).Thank you very much that I havent had in past instructions.Sorry, only tar.bz2 is available currently. Please try to extract it with the following command:
Code: Select all
tar jxvf MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.5.img.tar.bz2
Somewhere I found a unzip or bzip with extract switch, but it failed to work.
Also PLEASE for love of CFE and Terminal users, try shorter names, this could be MATE17v05.img
Nothing wrong with system, just with the humans.Caseycullen and Musa extracted the tar.bz2 img without any problems. Please check your system.
Some steps like (DD/UnTar) that you take for granted arent - while we should be in time newbie Linux users are
GUI depended, not Terminal wizards. I know that we have to go to terminal to take over priviledges.
If other users succeeded in right click extract here - hmmm. I have to old Debian and your Ubuntu Live DVD
just cant handle it because he is either restricted in rw priviledges or similar.

Please look here for the stable longterm kernel 4.9: http://www.supertuxkart-amiga.de/amiga/kernel49.html
I see installs are extremely kernel sensitive, so please either always link needed kernel
in install instructions, or at the kernels sections separate user section with just stable kernels
- having them all plus alphas and betas doesnt help much.
vox wrote: LiveDVD if possible, would be best as it wouldnt require previous Linux install and essentially keeping two linuxes (see bootdvd batch and kernel on Ubuntu Remix DVD).It isnt the same since it full times occupies a large stickLiveUSB is the same. You can also create a MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 USB flash drive on Windows or on macOS. It's very easy and better as burning a DVD.
Code: Select all
But ..... you can try the ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS Live DVD if you like. :-)
(or at least I cant do it), cannot install with official installer, cannot really delete partitions from its gparted
even in your alternative script sudo edit and finally alternative script looks like it copies the files, but once
restarted the system with latest 4.x kernels, system doesnt boot to MATE GUI on RadeonHD 7000 2GB
Looking at how Remix 12 DVD was built with bootdvd small batch file, couldnt be created a working
normal DVD, as it is much less hussle then any of above mentioned methods?
I know about the tinkering theory but since I use the same Ubuntu on x64 all I can say is:
a) Its is because CFE cannot really boot LILO/GRUB, Uboot can at least read some dual boot block of HDD, amigaboot.of wasnt made to look for Linux in similar fashion and CFE isnt good enough/large enough and bugfixed to at least
have some newer Uboot style menus. Choice of CFE which isnt users, has helped a lot. It could be advantage
if was done a bit better (vmlinux and amiga kickstart files could also be on card or in real ROM making able to just select what to "connect" to which partition and software changable)
b) It is because boards havent been supplied to real devel teams of distro and no real support was provided
with all respect to Amiga Linux team, support should be inbuilt in distros, like PPC Mac users dont have such "thinkering" even with similar hardware
c) So the rest is hacking. And it creates a lot of stress
And honest question is - is anyone working on 3D bug on PPC32/64BE Linuxes
and again, since x1000-x5000 are LE machines, could we
