rtlwifi puzzle [was wi-fi puzzle]

No sense in starting a really new thread.

I happened to notice today that my boot messages end with

Code: Select all

rtlwifi: Selected firmware is not available.
I suspect that this relates to my previously reported problem, which I leave below. The new puzzle is, why is that firmware missing?

/lib/modules/4.9.0-re6_A-EON_AmigaONE_X1000_Nemo/modules.dep is full of lines containing "rtlwifi." Obviously that is not good enough.

I have tried googling the problem, but found no clear answer on what I need to do to get the required "firmware."

[Previous post, edited:]
...
Today I clicked on my wi-fi name and got the little window to type in my password, but when I looked, my wi-fi was still listed with five others, under "Wi-Fi Networks" and "disconnected."

I tried clicking on my wi-fi's name again, but no little window came up. I looked on the network listings again, and this time I was listed between "Wi-Fi Networks" and "Disconnect." But seconds later, it had gone back to "disconnected."
...
Now if I could get Bluetooth, that would really be much more worthwhile!
[I have acquired Bluetooth, somewhat eratically, since I wrote that.]

I wondered if it didn't like competing with Ethernet connection 1, so I called up the wi-fi again and disconnected the ethernet and clicked on something in Firefox. "No signal." The wi-fi connection had sure enough conked out.

This is of no great importance, but I wonder if anyone knows what the problem is?

Hi kilaueabart,

I am sorry I don't know what the problem is. I compiled the stable kernel 4.8.8 with support for Realtek RTL8192CU/RTL8188CU 802.11n USB wireless network adapters. Please test your USB WLAN adapter with the kernel 4.8.8.

Thanks,
Christian

I still get the same result: my wi-fi name jumps up above "disconnected" in the Wi-Fi Networks list for a few seconds after I give my password and click "connect," then drops down below it.

Maybe my adapter is too different from Realtek RTL8192CU/RTL8188CU? WLAN.HTML lists mine, puzzlingly, so:
vendor: 7392 ("Edimax Technology Co., Ltd"), product: 7811 ("EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188CUS]")
vendor: 7392 ("Edimax Technology Co., Ltd"), product: 7811 ("EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188CUS]")
vendor: 7392 ("Edimax Technology Co., Ltd"), product: 7811 ("EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188CUS]")
vendor: 7392 ("Edimax Technology Co., Ltd"), product: 7811 ("EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188CUS]"), interface class: ff ("Vendor Specific Class"), subclass: ff ("Vendor Specific Subclass"), protocol: ff ("Vendor Specific Protocol")
Why three identical lines? I don't know what "ff" means, but when I plugged the thing in, CFE said something like "No FF available."

I guess maybe I should try buying one from Realtek.

Just for info:
PowerBookG4Enjoyer wrote: I tested some USB Wi-Fi dongles on Void with Network Manager recently to see which ones work out of the box. Here are the results:
TP-Link TL-WN725N (Realtek RTL8188EUS) - works out of the box
TP-Link Archer T600U Nano - isn't detected at all
TP-Link TL-WN823N - is detected but won't connect
Generic dongle (Realtek RTL8192EU) - is detected but will not connect
Ralink MT7601U - same story, doesn't want to connect to my network
