I have 16.04 working, but its dog slow on my x1k. GLXGears gives me 114 FPS & FireFox is almost un-usable.
Would be nice to have step by step instructions on how to get h/w aceleration going with different gfx cards, mine is a Southern Island 970.
If this can be done, pllease do not make any assumptions, must be for real dummies :-D

Hi Ken,

Unfortunately hardware 3D acceleration doesn't work with SI graphics cards. Alex Perez and another developer are still working on a solution.

You can install an additional graphics card based on the Northern Islands series for hardware 3D acceleration if you like. For example AlfredOne's X1000 works with two graphics cards.

1st PCI-e slot: Radeon HIS4670
2nd PCI-e slot: Radeon R9-280X

Cheers,
Christian

I have a 4850, no idea if it does h/w accel, & not about to hunt down an old card just for linux. But this thread could be useful if others posted what gfx cards do h/w accel in linux. A list of cards & a how to would make for a nice source of information all in one place.

Hi Ken,

You can enable hardware 3D acceleration with your 4850! (RV770 -- radeon/R700_rlc.bin radeon/RV770_smc.bin radeon/RV770_uvd.bin) :-)

Did you install the ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 LTS live DVD?

Cheers,
Christian
