Tom,

I haven't found any error messages in your log files. Could you please test another display connector? (DVI etc)

Thanks,
Christian

Tom,

Additionally, could you please post the output of ps -C Xorg after you booted the alpha8?

Thanks,
Christian

Tom,

I have found something. Since the alpha5 the kernel mounts your root partition only readonly.

My dmesg:

Code: Select all

[ 2.522231] EXT2-fs (sdb7): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
[ 2.524998] EXT4-fs (sdb7): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
[ 2.525014] VFS: Mounted root (ext4 filesystem) on device 8:23.
Your dmesg:

Code: Select all

[6.443138] EXT4-fs (sdb5): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
[ 6.443155] VFS: Mounted root (ext4 filesystem) readonly on device 8:21.
Please boot the alpha8 with the following boot arguments:

setenv bootargs "root=/dev/<your partition> rw"

For example:

Code: Select all

setenv bootargs "root=/dev/sdb8 rw"
Thanks,
Christian

I connected the HDMI out from the X1000 directly to the HDMI on the monitor.
No change in the behaviour.
Additionally, could you please post the output of ps -C Xorg after you booted the alpha8?
This is empty. There is no "Xorg" in the process list running after I login to the raw terminal screen.
Please boot the alpha8 with the following boot arguments:
setenv bootargs "root=/dev/<your partition> rw"
Doing this, I still end up in the plain terminal screen for login, but
I seem to get more information during the bootup.

Lightdm starts up, starting up XServer and making progress until
it shows a "Process 2624 terminated with signal 6" and then shuts
XServer and itself down :?:

This repeats about 10 times, logging this text each time

Hi Tom,

Many thanks for testing. Is your root partition really mounted read-only? Could you please boot with the alpha8 and try to login? (terminal/console/shell login)
If this works then please try to create a file. (touch test.txt)

Thanks a lot for your help,
Christian

Maybe the following commit is the problem:

powerpc/hugetlb: enable hugetlb migration for ppc64

I don't think so.
I did the setenv bootargs "root=/dev/<your partition> rw" for CFE.
And I can create a file in the top directory if I do "sudo touch /trash.txt"
Maybe the following commit is the problem:
powerpc/hugetlb: enable hugetlb migration for ppc64
Evidently the HugeTLB enable was registered, as there is this
line in the dmesg output
. [ 0.130380] HugeTLB registered 16.0 MiB page size, pre-allocated 0 pages

The signal, SIGABRT, that shuts down the Lightdm process seems to be from
pid=1. Maybe a kernel assert() failed at that point?

 my reaction to all the log files :o

Hi Tom,

Julian tested the latest Git/alpha kernel on his X5000. The X5000 has the same problem with Xorg.

The bad commit is somewhere between the alpha4 and alpha5. (7. July 5:52AM till 8. July 6.04AM)

We have to check the commits between the alpha4 and alpha5.

Cheers,
Christian
