X1000 Linux install SOLVED

Postby xenic » Sun Aug 26, 2018 5:44 pm

Last November I D/L a Linux install for X5000 from a USB stick. I got the install files from the "Spectre660's Linux downloads for the X5000" and some help. I've been able to use FireFox on my X5000. I recently switched back to my X1000 (X5000 is in the closet) and would like to install Linux on my X1000 so I can use FireFox. I've searched this "X1000 - Linux Only" forum and am confused by the number of ubuntu version topics etc. Is there a topic for installing a stable ubuntu (don't care if it's lastest) with instructions? I can no longer access some important Internet sites with Odyssey and need Linux FireFox.

You could try out our ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS PowerPC live DVD: Link. If you like the DVD, then you can install it on your X1000 and after that update it to the latest version 16.04.5.

It took quite a while to D/L the iso on my slow Internet connection but I D/L it and burned it to a DVD. I'm assuming that I need CFE commands to boot the DVD and found these commands in that topic:

Code: Select all
CFE> ramdisk -addr=0x24000000 -fs=iso atapi0.1:casper/powerpc64/initrd.

CFE> setenv bootargs "root=/dev/ramdisk file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-mate.seed boot=casper quiet ro splash --"

CFE> boot -elf -noints -fs=iso atapi0.1:casper/powerpc64/vmlinux.

That's a lot to type in with no errors but I'll try it this afternoon.

I booted from the ubuntu DVD but have some questions before proceeding to the install.
There are 2 install icons on the ubuntu desktop:
1. Install Ubuntu MATE with the alternative script.
2. Install Ubuntu MATE 16.04.1.
Why and when would I want to use the alternative script?

Does the installer need a formatted partition or just an empty partition?
Can I install ubuntu on a USB stick and how would I do that?
Can I install ubuntu on a secondary hard disk?

Once I install ubuntu, what procedure or commands will I need to start the installed ubuntu?

Sorry about all the questions but I'm clueless when it comes to Linux.

There are some problems with the default installer. I would recommend you to use the alternative installer.

The alternative installer uses GParted for creating and formatting partitions.

You can create a partition and install it on a USB stick with the alternative installer as well.

Yes, of course.

Copy a kernel to the CF card or to a USB stick. After that you can start Linux with the following commands:

Code: Select all
CFE> setenv bootargs "root=/dev/<your Ubuntu partition>"

From a USB stick:

Code: Select all
CFE> boot -elf -noints -fatfs usbdisk0:vmlinux-4.19

From the CF card:

Code: Select all
CFE> boot -elf -noints -fatfs cf0:vmlinux-4.19

Later, you could configure a CFE menu entry.

Code: Select all
CFE> setenv -p MENU_2_LABEL "ubuntu MATE 16.04 with kernel 4.19"

Code: Select all
CFE> setenv -p MENU_2_COMMAND 'set pmu -astate=A4 ; setenv bootargs "root=/dev/<your Ubuntu partition> quiet ro splash" ; boot -elf -noints -fatfs cf0:vmlinux-4.19'

I tried the the alternate install script, formatted a USB stick and installed ubuntu. The install seems to have worked OK, so I may go ahead and install on my hard disk. However, I don't know where to get the kernal. I really appreciate your help but I have one more question: Where do I get the kernal and how do I copy it??

Downloads:

Stable kernel 4.18: vmlinux-4.18-AmigaOne_X1000_X5000.tar.gz

Test kernel 4.19:

vmlinux-4.19-alpha12-AmigaOne_X1000_X5000.tar.gz

vmlinux-4.19-rc1-AmigaOne_X1000.tar.gz

Please copy vmlinux-4.18 or vmlinux-4.19 to the CF card. You can also boot it from a USB stick but I recommend to boot from the CF card.

@xeno74
Thanks for the help. I think I have all the info I need but will need to rethink my install. The installer won't (or can't) create a partition on my main hard disk. I only had 8 partitions on my X5000 and the ubuntu partition was the 9th. Because of the CFE boot partition, my X1000 already has 9 Amiga partitions and unbuntu won't create another partition. I don't know if it's a ubuntu/linux limitation or a limitation of the partitioner. I'll need to try some other options to get ubuntu working on my X1000. I'll let you know if I find a way to get it working.

I added partition 10 from AmigaOS and was then able to format that partition in ubuntu. I also formatted a USB stick in ubuntu. I used the alternate install script to copy the ubuntu files to the hard-disk partition and to the USB stick. Even though the files scrolled by in the terminal like they were being copied, when I opened the partition and the USB stick they both showed as empty.

Despite not seeing the files I tried to start both from a USB stick but got these results for both:

Using vmlinux-4.19 I got this error:
Not an ELF format executable.

Using vmlinux-4.18 I got this error:
Kernal panic - not syncing: No working init found. Try passing init= option to kernal.

I've reached a dead end for the install but thanks for the help and maybe I'll try again at a later date.

Hi Xenic,

Maybe you typed the incorrect partition device or you typed it in a wrong format in the installer.

The correct format is: /dev/<your partition>

For example: /dev/sdb2

Additionally, maybe you need to reformat your CF card.
