I have a use for the speedbar for when a row a buttons is too wide for the screen. It has the ability to mouse wheel scroll through the list. Nice. But....
Can a visual clue be added, as needed to both sides, that there are more items that can be scrolled into view? << and >>
As is, the user may never try to scroll and think he has to make the window larger to see the items. Not always a good thing.

Understand exactly where you are coming from.
Speedbar is very unintuitive for that very reason, no visual clue as to the hidden buttons and no obvious way to access them.
Small next prev buttons at each end as required would be my preference.
