Okay then.. reburn the cd (it's a cheap test) and
Is the cd drive attached to the internal sata port one (while the hard drive is attached to internal sata port zero)

Can you put the hard drive back in the sam, and just format dho, it might be trying to boot from the hard drive
Hold down the the two mouse buttions to see the early boot menu? what do you see?

Lets start from the beginning... as Tony requested
Please list your components, memory (how much, what kind) etc

where are you? if close to Sacramento, I can help with Video card test. I use a r7 250x, IT works!

The machine is working, since it can run U-Boot, run amigaboot.ub and load Kickstart. That means that nearly all hardware is working properly, particularly the SD card, CPU, memory, USB, disk interface and video graphics chain. There's not much that hasn't been run at that point.

Let's forget about "machines not working" and try to find out why your new machine won't boot the Install CD. This is a pretty basic operation and it's also pretty slow from CD, so here is what you should expect on an X5000:

[I'm assuming that we are talking about the same screens. You have not answered my questions about screen titles etc, so I'm guessing]

From the moment that you type "Enter" after selecting the boot device on the screen headed "AmigaOS 4.x U-Boot Bootloader V53.21":

0:00 It says "Booting configuration AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition" and starts loading Kickstart modules.
0:53 KS all loaded. It says "About to call loader entry at xxx". Screen goes black for 1-2 seconds.
0:55 Splash screen "AmigaOS 4.1" appears while system boots.
1.32 Splash screen disappears.
1:34 Workbench backdrop appears.

I suspect that somehow your machine is trying to boot from the 460 installation and is crashing, but without some more information I can't help you.

Please get into the U-Boot command line (ESC, M when the Boing Ball starts spinning) and enter these two commands:
setenv os4_bootdevice auto
saveenv

That will force the machine to boot from the CD rather than any other installation of higher boot priority. Without that setting, it *could* load Kickstart modules from the CD, then look around and see the Sam 460 boot priority is higher than that of the CD and try to boot the system from the Sam 460 partition.

After fixing that, you should type "Boota" and try again.

You also didn't answer the question "Have you another computer with a serial port?" If you have, it might be instructive to attach it to the X5000 and see what it says to the serial port. I would certainly recommend it.
Use settings of 115200 baud, 8N1.

How much memory do you have installed?

[edit: G'day, Mike!]

(hi Tony)
I think it's the hard drive from the sam, we had that problem here too.
I used a new clean drive in it's place to prove the issue and learned (remembered) the two mouse early startup tip!

(From one of Niolater's earlier posts)
At first I thought that the problem might be caused by some kind of conflict with the SAM 460 installation so I tried to start from the CD without any hard drive attached. It made no difference at all.

I missed that...so if the hard drive can be ruled out?

It's the graphic card...I don't know if the evergreen chip set is supported in the 7870 card!

I tested the southern island chip set in the r7 250x card

If Hans' compatibility list is still up-to-date it doesn't seem like it.
Evergreen is not even listed as is a 7870.

Maybe it is the graphics card then? I will try to get a hold of a graphics card that is on Hans list but that might take a few days.

@tonyw: It loads the kickstart and if I read really fast I can just see a glimpse of the line "About to call loader entry at xxx" before the screen goes dark but it never comes on after that.

I have now tested with another hard drive (currently using ext3 filesystem) but no change.

I added the line you gave me to U-Boot but it has no effect.

I do have an old PC with a serial port that I can connect to the AmigaOne. I will see if I can get a serial printout tonight.

For some reason I was assuming that the graphics card had been used previously in the Sam 460. If that is wrong and you haven't used it with OS4 before, then that would seem to be a likely cause of the problem.

A serial cable would help confirm that.

No it isn't the same card. I sold my SAM 460 as a complete system (except for the hard drive). I should have explained that. I have found a HD 4890 card on an auction site. If I am lucky I will win the auction today and have the card before Christmas.

I have managed to get at serial dump. It starts when the kickstart begins to load and ends when the monitor goes dark. There is no serial output after that.
