Disappearing Sound on X5K

Post by amigasociety »

Noticed the other day as I use the X5K all day, at some point the sound goes away. Reboot takes care of it but appears a bug never the less.

Using the stock sound card as installed by Amiga On The Lake which is a SIIG Soundwave 5.1 PCI Card.

Anyone else have sound that goes bye bye at some point?

Actually, it would be the newer SOUND preferences as Enhancer from A-Eon/AmigaKit replaces it.

The stock settings in Sound Prefs appears to selected CM8738: HiFi 16 Bit Stereo +

Flash Display is checked marked under sound settings as is System Startup sound also checked.

Is there some other setting you wanted me to look for?

It is as-is with what came installed on my system and what Amiga OS and Enhancer 1.2 selected.

Guess thew new Sound stuff included with Enhancer 1.2 could be an issue but someone else that knows X5K says it may be some other issue with PCI card conflict.

Mine has PCI Nic and PCI Sound. He asked for me to remove the NIC and go internetless for a bit to see if sound comes and goes.

Just have not found the time to try that.

But wonder if others have sound issues coming and going.

Please try to set it to Unit:0 instead.

Done.

Will report back as I see how things pan out.

Good, i hope it will help. :)

I suspect that it might help because when you set the music unit to unit 0: several applications can access the unit at the same time without locking it.
AFAIK every app using the music unit will use one channel from Unit 0: so you might want to set it to a higher value than the default but i might be totaly wrong about what the channel slider does.

TJ,

Is only the sound affected? Can you still use the rest of the system?
cheers

Hi Tony, the rest of the system seems to keep running. Not locked up.

AmigaAmp seems a little off when I select a mp3 to play, it does not play it in that the counter stays at 0 so does not count. Maybe something affects it but I just quit it and use different app to see if I have sound.

other apps that I run but no sound. IRC sounds stop. Playing a video in MPlayer works but no sound.

So most apps seem to act normal (other than AmigaAmp maybe) but no sound from them. Reboot takes care of it.

But so far today using Unit 0 as SMF asked, I have had sound all day. Coincedance but in time we will see.

Update... sound gone again. So Unit 0 does not help. Sorry.

My sound died after trying to play a 720p video from Mplayer.

So sound was good all day until I tried a 720p video.

Video played.... no sound... all other apps now lost sound too.

Only reboot will get sound back.

This seems to be the same issue as discussed in thie thread: http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... =57&t=3625 -- just manifested in a slightly different way.

I was the one who told TJ how to induce the crash/freeze/etc. It happens while playing ANY video, but a larger one (720p for example) will accelerate things. With a PCIe sound card (and a PCI network card) the system freezes hard and you have to shut down the hard way. With a PCI sound card (and a PCI network card), the sound just stops playing and you have a short while to reboot before the system freezes hard. This is a better option, so I'm sticking with a PCI sound card for now.

I explained how to induce the problem to a beta tester a few weeks ago (which he successfully replicated) and he said that he filed a bug report, so hopefully the problem will eventually be tracked down.

To the beta tester who says that his system doesn't freeze (or sound doesn't stop playing) can you identify specifically which PCi & PCIe cards you have in your machine. Can you also try playing a 720p video? It should crash within a minute or so.

I have ordered another card to try, but without specific recommendations, it's a shot in the dark.
