More USB weirdness

Postby icbrkr » Sun Aug 20, 2017 5:28 pm

I've noticed some weird happenings when attempting to pull files from a USB jump drive, iPhone, etc.

If I plug the jump drive or iPhone into the front USB sockets (haven't tried the rear ones), and then while files are transferring, attempt to do anything on the computer, the keyboard starts doing odd inputs.

If I try to type in a text box, the last character recognized (say "n") will then repeat over and over "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn" until it finally gives up.

If I try to move a window around, the window gets 'moved' somewhere else on the screen, and much of the time, off screen and I'm unable to bring it back.

More or less, the computer is unusable while I move files. And since I'm moving 10GB over USB 2.0, this takes a -lot- of time.

The Amiga was on a KVM, so I went and hooked the keyboard and mouse straight back into it and it seemed to have solved the issue. Very weird.

Okay.. the actual issue is the keyboard.

It doesn't work *unless* I run it through a KVM. If I plug it in straight nothing happens.

I tried a basic DELL keyboard, and .. nothing.

The stack detects it, says it's a keyboard, and then... nothing works.

I tried a generic one.. same thing.

I stole a MacAlly one from my daughter's Macmini, it detects it as a MacAlly keyboard and it works fine.

I had problems with my MS wireless mouse. Some times it didn't get recognized when booting, sometimes the keyboard didn't get recognized or sometimes neither the keyboard or the mouse got recognized. I eventually discovered that if I plugged the mouse into an (unpowered) external USB2 hub that was plugged into the front USB port, everything worked as it should. I suggest you try using a USB2 hub for the mouse or the keyboard and see if that helps.

I also tried a USB3 hub that is supposedly backward compatible with USB2 but that didn't work at all.
