External USB CD/DVD that works with X5000

Postby amigasociety » Wed Nov 29, 2017 2:50 am

Anyone successfully running an external USB CD/DVD on their X5K?

I now have my X5K in a new case that does not have a 5.25" bay so need to look at options to read/write CD/DVDs, preferably a external USB model.

If you have one that works, please offer me info on it.

I did try one that I already own but it failed to work.

A 2nd option is to buy and add a SATA PCI card that has external ports and install the DVD I had from my old chassis in a small external DVD case and run it that way.

Thanks

Anyone?

Guess no one uses external USB CD/DVD units here.

Bummer.... new case has no slot for 5.25" drives so need an external solution.

Thanks

I've got this one.

But I can't seem to get it to stay connected, even using a powered hub.

Since I have tried 3 different brands.. is there something special one has to do, driver wise, to allow a USB CD/DVD to work under Amiga OS?

Maybe that is where my problem is. Maybe I need to put some special driver in Dev directory?

I use an old external 5.25 USB 2.0 Mobile disk box with an IDE DVD when I need to read CD's or DVDs.
It has its own built in power supply.
Nothing special needed to be done for it to read disks.

Ah, sorry for the late reply. While building up some of my systems (Pegasos II/Sam440ep) I occasionally did use an external housed slim-line USB-DVD drive. It just worked, nothing special.

@AmigaSociety

I have this one as well that wlemonds has and confirmed just now it works. Am looking at removing the one inside case as I really done like CD/DVD media. I have this for my PC on the rare time I need.

Is this the exact you you have, as the link provided did not work.

Does it stay connected w/o dropping off like wlemonds said his does?

Can you swap out CDs and it read each one, or do you have to reboot the computer for it to work?

Thanks

Try connecting one of the rear USB ports if you are using a front port .
