Maximum power output from USB ports?

I got an answer from the customer service of Lacie and they said it is worth trying... Their guess was that in most cases their USB 3.0 drive will spin also in a USB 2.0 port. The standby power of their disks is very low, too. But if there appears problems, they recommended simply to use a Y-adapter.
