X5000 hard drive swap

Postby esc » Fri Jun 01, 2018 5:45 pm

Hi guys,

I recently bought a larger hard drive so I can triple boot my X5000. I’d like to know how I can migrate my current OS4.1 installation on my existing hard drive to the new one.

I know I could use both drives, but I prefer to consolidate to just one for now, so it’s unnecessary to recommend that :)

I'm assuming you currently have 1 HDD attached to one header on the MB and a DVD drive attached to the other?

I would remove the DVD drive and attach the new HDD drive. Boot the machine, and then prep the new drive. Copy everything from the old drive to the new drive.

I would then remove the old HDD, put it in a safe place and put the DVD drive back.

Assuming your data from the old drive isn't too much, copy everything from your HDD to a flash drive. It's a pretty good idea to do that anyway (in technical terms it's called a "back up" :D ).

Remove your old HDD and put the new one in. Boot from the OS4.1 disc and copy everything across.

As Davey said, you can simply copy the system from one partition to another and it will work exactly the same.

The only qualification is that you have to be sure that the new partition is flagged as "Bootable" in MTB.

You can also set some of the U-Boot vars to make booting easier. I'll spell them out for you if no one else does first, but I'll have to look then up.
