VLC without AltiVec for the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 0.9

Post by xeno74 »

Hi All,

I created a VLC package for the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 0.9 today.

Download: vlc_2.2.2-without_altivec_mate_powerpc_remix.tar.gz

Installation instructions:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --remove vlc-plugin-skins2
sudo dpkg --remove vlc-l10n
sudo dpkg --remove vlc-bin
sudo dpkg --remove libvlc-bin
sudo dpkg --remove vlc-plugin-qt

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *
The MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 0.9 with the VLC media player on an AmigaOne X5000:

Please test it.

Thanks,
Christian

I wish I knew how to do that kind of thing.

The install didn't quite work for me. I got some odd messages:

Code: Select all

amigaone@ubuntu:~/Downloads/vlc_2.2.2-without_altivec_mate_powerpc_remix$ sudo dpkg --remove vlc-l10n
dpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove vlc-l10n which isn't installed

amigaone@ubuntu:~/Downloads/vlc_2.2.2-without_altivec_mate_powerpc_remix$ sudo dpkg --remove vlc-plugin-qt
dpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove vlc-plugin-qt which isn't installed
And a solid wall of them during the install.

I haven't quite been able to view YouTube. I can get this sort of thing that I used to get on the 16.04 before the new vlc:
screen2.png
This is a still shot, no movement, and ghosted, from a YouTube broadcast. I guess I did something wrong with the install. Can you guess what?

I was pleased to see that the radio part works. First time I have had radio on Ubuntu. Maybe it'll work on the 16.04 side too?

Oh, here is something interesting that came up as I was experimenting:

Code: Select all

File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "/media/amigaone/c65e1dca-e1fc-4a77-8258-e1404880e2f2/home/christian/Videos/Crazy Kiya Re - Full song in HD - Dhoom 2.mp4" (No such file or directory).

Kilaueabart,

Does the new VLC works on your MATE PowerPC Remix? Did you listen to the radio with the new VLC? Please post the output of the command vlc. If VLC works, then please test a video.

Thanks,
Christian

Kilaueabart,

If a video works with the new VLC on your MATE PowerPC Remix, then we can configure ViewTube for YouTube videos. The message you have seen is only about a test video I have used to test the VLC.

Cheers,
Christian

As I mentioned in my previous post, I did listen to the radio. There is something called Icecast Radio Directory, which brings up roughly 17 zillion stations, and almost all I tested play. I also have a "Jamenco Selections," which seems to be a playlist of musical recordings.
Please post the output of the command vlc. If VLC works, then please test a video.
The screen dump below is a two in one response. I have five videos in my REMIX, two .AVI files; a 30 second Sample.mp4 I got a long time ago for testing that I think has some sort of animation to music; two TextinMotion-Samples, one -576p.mp4, and one -720p.mp4. The .AVIs open their initial screens, but although the time bar under them advances as long as I let it run, there is no motion. The same is true of the two TextinMotions. No motion. Sample.mp4 on the other hand plays 30 seconds of music to a black window.
Maybe I should try to remove vlc and reinstall it? The avcodec errors came up while trying Sample.mp4.

I thought I used to know a way to find out without crawling under the desk with a flashlight, but I don't remember. OS4 Workbench tells me "Radeon HD 7700 Series," but doesn't narrow it down. Next time I have the machine off...

Meanwhile I should report that the differences between REMIX and 16.04 are less than I thought. I can't get vlc to intervene at youtube.com on REMIX like I can on 16.04. That part was true. But even on 16.04 I can't play those .mp4 and AVI files just by clicking on them, which brings them up under vlc. I was able to get Sample.mp4 (animals, birds, with music) to play with extra clicking, but not the other .mp4s or the AVIs. If I want to watch the things in my Video folder, I need to use SMPlayer.

By the way, I have something called "YouTube Browser for SMPlayer" that used to show YouTube videos, but all it does now is tell me it couldn't find the URL. Might as well uninstall it, I guess.
