Just following up about video playback on X5000 with MATE PowerPC Remix 0.5...

The MPlayer app with mpv as the engine and opengl as the decoder works fine and performs pretty well. Direct Rendering can be enabled and I found that setting decode threads to 2 gave best performance. However, vdpau does not work with mpv engine and will cause a crash (vdpau did work in the MPlayer app using mplayer engine and opengl decoder in MATE 16.04). Since mplayer engine wasn't installed I did not try it.
VLC doesn't work on X5000, and the MPV app performs much worse than MPlayer for some reason. Xine launched but upon trying to play a video my entire system locked up.

So, I'd recommend using MPlayer with mpv engine, opengl decoder, direct rendering and set to use 2 threads. I tested with a variety of 1080p videos.

Hi Casey,

Many thanks for testing. Unfortunately the MPlayer engine doesn't work on the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017.

Error message:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: R_PPC_REL24 relocation at 0x2049a790 for symbol `htonl' out of range
We tested it on the X5000 and X1000. Maybe we could try the MPlayer engine from Debian Sid. VLC doesn't work on the X5000. I think because of the missing AltiVec engine.

Cheers,
Christian

Hi Christian,
I just tried MPlayer from Sid, same issue:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: R_PPC_REL24 relocation at 0x2075754c for symbol `htonl' out of range
I think this is happening because the code was compiled without -fPIC

Maybe we could try to self compile the MPlayer. Thank you for testing it on Debian Sid.

Good news, the version of mplayer from deb-multimedia repositories works on X5000 with Output driver 'gl (fast - ATI cards)', and direct rendering enabled; VDPAU hardware decoding also works.
Repository: deb ftp://ftp.deb-multimedia.org sid main
