Thanks for releasing. I was able to boot into the image with my X5000, and it seems to run very well. Firefox 47 and 50 both run well. Firefox 47 was set to German, Firefox 50 was set to English.
I'm able to run SuperTuxKart on my X5000, and it runs very nicely. Did you recompile the game without Altivec extensions?
VLC does not work. I think Luigi said he compiled VLC from source without Altivec extensions to get it to work. I have not tried this yet. Perhaps you could incorporate VLC without Altivec?
Will there be an install script and/or a debian installer released?

Thanks again!

Hi Caseycullen,

Many thanks for testing the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 0.1 on your X5000. :-)

Thanks for the hint about Firefox 47. I have to set up it to English too. It's really a surprise that SuperTuxKart runs very nicely on your X5000 because of AltiVec optimizations. I released a special version for the X5000 without any AltiVec optimizations four years ago.

Download: supertuxkart-0.8.1-2-linux-glibc2.11.1-ppc.tar.gz

Please try it.

I will add the alternative installer script to the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 and maybe a VLC without any AltiVec optimizations.

Thanks,
Christian

Hi Christian,
I was also surprised that STK with Altivec runs on my X5000.
This screen shot shows STK that comes preinstalled with MATE PPC Remix:

I downloaded the version without Altivec, it also runs very nicely. I notice no difference in the two, except that the link you provided has many add-ons :D
This screen shot shows STK I downloaded from the link you provided:

Hi Caseycullen,

Thanks a million for testing STK! :-) It's good to know that the AltiVec version works too. :-) That means, I don't need to install the X5000 version on the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017. This saves space. :-)

BTW, I set up Firefox 47 in English on the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 USB img yesterday. Thanks for the hint.

Have a lot of fun with STK!

Cheers,
Christian

Hi All,

The second test version of the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 is available. :-)

New:
  • Some new wallpapers
  • fbdev is the default Xorg driver now. (You can change it to "radeon" if you like)
  • Firefox 52.0b9
  • Firefox 47 set up in English. (Thanks to Caseycullen)
  • Problem with the language support fixed
  • Many updates from ubuntu MATE 17.04
Download: MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.2.img.tar.bz2

Please note: There isn't a boot partition in this image. You can create an extra boot partition and copy the image to another partition on your USB flash drive.

Please test it.

Thanks,
Christian

Hi All,

You can copy it to an empty partition as well.

Instructions:
  1. Mount the image: sudo mount MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.2.img /mnt
  2. Create a new partition and mount it to /media.
  3. Copy with rsync the files from the image to the new empty partition: sudo rsync --stats --progress --numeric-ids -axAhHSP /mnt /media

Please try it.

Thanks,
Christian

Hi All,

MATE 1.18 has been released and is available for ubuntu MATE 17.04 PowerPC. :-)

New:
  • The entire MATE Desktop suite of applications and components is now GTK3+ only! (All GTK2+ code has been dropped including the --with-gtk build option)
  • Other updates
I successfully upgraded MATE to version 1.18.0 on ubuntu MATE 17.04 PowerPC today and it works fantastic. Many thanks to the MATE developers. They have done a great job!

Today at 12:00 PM, the PowerPC architecture has been dropped. It is not possible to upgrade Ubuntu 17.04 PowerPC anymore. All PowerPC ISOs have been deleted. You can still download some deb packages from http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ and install them manually.

I uploaded the last ISOs to my web space.

Fortunately I was able to upgrade ubuntu MATE 17.04 PowerPC before 12:00 PM. Today, there were a lot of ubuntu MATE artwork upgrades like wallpapers, themes, and icons.

I am working on a new test version of the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017. You can test the latest version of the MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 if you like.

Dear developers,

Last year, I wrote[1] to let you know that the powerpc architecture would be
dropped from zesty as of Feature Freeze.

We are well into Feature Freeze at this point, so an update is overdue. As
of Feature Freeze in February, the status is that powerpc packages are no
longer considered for proposed-migration, and we have discontinued all CD
image builds for powerpc in zesty.

For the moment, uploads continue to be built for powerpc in Launchpad, and
packages are still published in the archive. You should expect both to be
discontinued before the 17.04 release.

Thanks,

Same installationprocedure as the last version? With the change that this has a new file name :-)
Mount the image: sudo mount MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.2.img /mnt
Create a new partition and mount it to /media.
Copy with rsync the files from the image to the new empty partition: sudo rsync --stats --progress --numeric-ids -axAhHSP /mnt /media
