Spectre660 wrote:You could try doing it with the Pi as it is a small .img file.
If you are running Ubuntu Mate on the Pi just right click on the downloaded .img icon and select "Open with Disk Image Writer"
Then select the USB drive to write to .
I have used pi to dd the install .img to what GParted had formatted to fat32 as /dev/sda1. After the dd, GParted sees it as orange triangle with "!", file system = black square, "unknown."
SanDisk Cruzer Glide 3.0, Size 29.81 GiB, Path /dev/sda; Partition table: msdos, Heads: 255, Sectors/track: 63, Cylinders: 3891, Total sectors: 62521344, Sector size: 512. Uboot doesn't recognize the file system type; no wonder.

But I get the same result on the X5000 with rawdisk, which seems to work, until I get the drive into Uboot. Then unrecognized file type anyway.

I tried to install Ubuntu Mate on the pi, but after a few hours of activity, I don't find any sign of such an OS.

Please try to resize /de/sda1 with GParted. After that try it again.

I am working on another option.
You will need a fat32 formatted USB thumb drive.
You should be able to format it to fat32 on the Pi.
Then download and extract a .zip archive directly to the fat32 USB thumb drive from either the Pi or X5000 with AmigaOS 4.1

@ kilaueabart

You can try this option.
Download the following zip archive and un compress to a fat32 formatted drive.
http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/to8t ... s.zip?dl=0
You can use the Pi to format the USB thumb drive to Fat32.
You can use AmigaOS 4.1 on the X5000 to download and extract the archive to the USB drive .

To boot the installer from U-boot use the following commands :

Code: Select all

usb reset
fatload usb 0:1 2000000 installer.scr
source
This should run the Debian Based installer that will install Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 to your hard drive.
You will have to make a note as to the linux drive letter that you have installed it to to boot it after the installation .
Yo will also the the USB thum drive from the installation to boot the kernel and .dtb files from.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm afraid you have been very busy on my behalf.

This install worked like a charm (except I stupidly messed up the system clock and haven't been able to get Workbench back on local time yet).

I haven't been able to guess the password yet. I didn't think of trying "AmigaOne"; I'll do that next time.

And now that I'm back on Workbench, I wonder if I could have used the browser in MATE to write this note.

Actually the password on the last installer is set by you so you have to remember or write down what you used during the installation.
If you used the preinstalled image option then the password is indeed amigaone .

I saw this topic and decided to try installing Linux. However, my system disk is fully formatted and used. Can I use your installer that I D/L and extracted to a FAT formatted flash drive to install to an external drive that I have connected to my SATA card? Does the destination on the drive need to be formatted in some special way?

@ xenic

Once destination drive and partition scheme are recognized then it can be used for the installation.
Using Installer option (1) http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz ... 776#p41558 will take you through the drive set up process.
Use the Manual partitioning option to be safe.
If you want to use partitions on the drive for AmigaOS 4.1 compatable filesystems as well then
first install it under AmigaOS 4.1FE . If not then the setup allow you to l create an ms-dos partition table if it does not already have one or if no AmigaOS RDB one is found .

I have moved my installations on to a separate hard drive with an extended partition system as I intend to eventually use a pciex1 stata 3 controller for linux.

Something else that you might be interested in is the use of U-boot script files like the installer.scr file that I added to the installer over the week end.
