I've also been testing distro rebranding following Ubuntu's guidelines for derivative distros with no issues noticed.
I've also upgraded all packages that have been updated in xenial LTS past MPPCR's version, with no issues noticed.

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="MATE PowerPC Remix"
/usr/lib/os-release
Code: Select all
NAME="MATE PowerPC Remix"

You should be ok to change anything that isn't labelled "ID".
To change the menu logo you could either download a theme from a Debian repo, or change the "start-here.svg" and "distributor-logo.svg" icons located in /usr/share/icons/Ambiant-MATE/apps/22
