There are quite a few packages that need local patches to work correctly, but at least with gentoo you can apply local patches in a sane way.
I haven't really compared the performance, all I can say for sure is that upgrading is slower since you have to compile everything yourself.
The reason I use it is for the flexibility it brings.

Could you please post a screenshot of your Gentoo desktop? Which window manager do you use?
