xeno74 wrote:Did you configure your HP printer with the HPlip gui? You can install it with the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install hplip-gui
No, that isn't what I used, but I just installed it and will try it out. Whatever I used before left a hplip-3.17.11 folder on my Desktop which I discovered today includes a
1254-line config.log with lots of compilation-terminating fatal errors which I suppose might be a clue if I can figure out what they mean. But I'll delete the things System > Administration > Printers brings up and try the new gui instead.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Kilaueabart,

I tried to install my HP/Samsung laser printer on ubuntu MATE 16.04.4 PowerPC today. I have the same problems like you. After that I tried to install the official HP/Samsung driver but without any success. I figured out, that the 'rastertospl' file is only for ARM, i386, and for x86_64 available. That means, the driver doesn't support our PowerPC architecture. But ... the generic PCL 5e printer supports my HP/Samsung laser printer. :-) I selected 'Generic' from the database. After that I selected the driver 'Generic PCL 5e Printer - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.11 [en] (recommended)'. Now, I can print without any problems.

Nice to read of your success, Christian. I didn't read it until after I had found HP Device Manager (I right-clicked the HP icon in the upper right corner and there it was). But when I tried using it, I ended up with this:
noHPdevice.png
Running hp-setup just looped back to the same, so then I tried CUPS web interface which turned out to be very familiar, although it went through the process as if it didn't remember ever doing it before.

At one point I was very pleased to see this bit appear: "usb://HP/OfficeJet%20Pro%208710?serial=CN668EW061&interface=1." My Raspberry Pi shows those same numbers as device URI, so I thought maybe I was successful this time. Then I tried the test print. As usual, out came the Ubuntu printer test page with the eight colored circles half solid half dotted, with the same old errors. Yellow virtually invisible, and two thin red lines across the central white circle inside the shaded gray circle.

Well, presumably that at least meant that there was an HP Device installed, so I went back to HP Device Manager, and got the same "No Installed ..." window. I tried F6 and Device | Refresh All. Still, "No ... Devices ..."

I have no idea where to find any "Generic" anything. The only list I usually get has only HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710 and [ditto]_Fax on it.

I've always been able to print well from the Amiga side, but the print program I use there can't do two-sided printing. I guess I'll give up and go back to printing through the Raspberry Pi, which does everything right.

If you add a new printer, then you have to choose a driver. There is a driver "Generic". Please select it and click on the button "Forward". You will find a lot of generic printer languages. There isn't a driver for my laser printer but I can select the driver language "PCL 5e" for my printer. After that I can print. I tested it also via the network and it works without any problems. I am not sure what printer language is for your printer. Maybe PCL 6 or something like that. Please test these drivers.

I tried a few "generic" that printed without error, but black and white. I'll have to experiment more, I guess. Mostly when I try to choose a drive, it tries to insist that I use HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710.ppd, which is already installed, and looking at it with nano, it seems like a perfectly good file (except perhaps that every line begins with a "*"). But HP Device Manager refuses to read it, and Diagnose HPLIP... gives me this:
devicecheck.png
The file is there. Why can't the computer read it? (An earlier line in the diagnosis file said it didn't have permission. Huh?)

Little success! There are some generic drivers with color support.

I finally had the sense to check the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 user's manual and found out its language is PCL3. The generic PCL3 prints the right colours but it may take me a while to figure out how to set its "options" to make it print out smoothly instead of in grainy little dots without losing grays.

Got my Canon MG7765 multifunction working (printer only) via wfi network. I had to use generic 1pp anywhere with 8-bit rgb colour (in printer settings). I cannot get the scanner working with XSANE unless I use a python script whcih doesn't provide a gui. Will probably hook up via usb to get scanner working.
