What happened to Thunderbird?

Post by kilaueabart »

Up to last April I had been using Thunderbird to read my email in Ubuntu on my X5000. For a couple of months I wasn't able to use the X5000, but when I started using it again, launching my email brings me this crap:

Code: Select all

JavaScript must be enabled in order for you to use University of Hawaii Mail in standard view. However, it seems JavaScript is either disabled or not supported by your browser. To use standard view, enable JavaScript by changing your browser options, then try again.

To use University of Hawaii Mail's basic HTML view, which does not require JavaScript, click here.
Javascript is turned on in my Thunderbird, as it always has been. Could it be that my email ISP has upgraded something and is looking for an enhanced version of Thunderbird? To avoid the crappy HTML version I now have to access my Raspberry Pi remotely and read my email through Chromium.

I frequently get a notice, when on the net with Ubuntu Thunderbird, that my Thunderbird is out of date and I should upgrade. But apt-get install tells me I am using the latest version for Ubuntu 16.04.

Maybe you should change to a newer version of ubuntu MATE.

Until my X1000 died I generally tried each possible upgrade, and "tested" each new kernel. Problems getting my SAM 460 going again as a replacement for the X1000, then getting Ubuntu 16.04.4 going on the X5000 seem to have made me timid. I had the idea that maybe 16.04 was a safe solid version to stick with, and I have also stuck with 4.13.11 for my kernel.

If I were positive that Powere Remix would fix my email problem I'd go for it. I'll probably see if I can upgrade to it anyway. Should I also get the most recent kernel?

You can test the new MATE PowerPC Remix 2017 0.9 from a USB stick. You don’t need to delete or upgrade your ubuntu MATE 16.04.4 LTS.

Installation instructions for booting the MATE PowerPC Remix from a USB stick.

Of course you can use a new kernel.

I was planning on using a new USB stick, after carefully removing the one that has 16.04 on it. Actually, the USB stick I run 16.04 from is large enough (119 GB) that I could put the Remix on it and still have room for 17 more Ubuntus. I have the vague idea that there may be a way to put the system inside, instead of leaving it USB dependent, but if so I never understood how.
Printed for ready reference.
But as usual things aren't going to go that easy for me. First I tried to download the Google drive copy of the archive, but that failed after 10 minutes. So I tried the one from Germany, and it was going to take 4 hr 14 min, the download tracker said. So I tried Google again, and this time it pretended to work, in 40 min 1 sec. But it seems too large (5.5 GB instead of 5.1, 5470960278 bytes), and I haven't been able to unarchive it.

I guess I'll try the German one again, next time I can spare four hours.

Is the MD5 checksum for the archive or for something that will come out of the archive? Well, I'll reread the whole Zesty Zapus thread and see if anything becomes clearer.

Of course you can use a new kernel.[/quote]

The MD5 checksum is for the archive. I would recommend you to use a new empty USB stick.

It took over four hours to download the Xenosoft.de version, which turned out to be identical in size, at least, to the quickly downloaded Google one: 5470960278 bytes, 5.,5 GB instead of the 5.1 advertised.

Both of them seem to flunk the MD5 test, or I'm doing something wrong:

Code: Select all

bart@X5000:~/Downloads$ mdsum MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.9.img.tar.bz2
mdsum: MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.9.img.tar.bz2: i/o error
I went ahead and extracted the .img anyway, astonished at how long it took. OS4 always seems to dearchive in a second or two.

Now I have to find an empty or emptyable USB memory and study up on what one does with .img's.

I didn't get a proper result for the checksum test, but went ahead and emptied a USB stick and copied the .img file to it anyway. Is that where I went wrong?

I tried booting with the "setenv bootargs" etc. routine, but it couldn't find uImage-4.9, so I gave up and just booted Ubuntu normally.

I was expecting to find a new thumb drive icon on my desktop, but I was not expecting it to be named "AMIGAONE." And the content was totally unexpected. Like who is John Schember with a Quick Start Guide (1) in /home/amigaone/Calibre Library?

I attach a .png with fascinating details. I can't make any sense of the figures GParted gives. But what should I do next?

Hi Kilaueabart,

You only need to copy the image with 'dd' to a partition on your USB flash drive.

Create two partitions on your USB flash drive. A small FAT16 boot partition and a big partition without a file system. Copy the dtb file and the Linux kernel to the first small FAT16 boot partition. After that copy the MATE PowerPC Remix img with 'dd' to the second big partition.

For example the partition /dev/sdd2 on a USB flash drive:

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=MATE_PowerPC_Remix_2017_0.9.img of=/dev/sdd2
You can boot it with the following commands (for example from /dev/sdd2):

Code: Select all

setenv bootargs root=/dev/sdd2 rootdelay=5

Code: Select all

fatload usb 0:1 1000000 uImage-4.18

Code: Select all

fatload usb 0:1 2000000 cyrus.dtb

Code: Select all

bootm 1000000 - 2000000
Good luck!

If it doesn't boot then try "usb start" and "usb reset".
