New X5000 owner - USB issues

Post by xenic »

I've only had my X5000 for 6 days. For 5 days my MS wireless mouse frequently isn't recognized after power-on, reset or warm reboot. The mouse almost always fails after the first power-on of the day. My MS wired keyboard occasionally fails to be recognized by not nearly as often as the mouse. Here is what transpired when I first turned on my X5000 this morning:

X5000 powered on.
Booting complete & mouse pointer only moves vertically.
Warm reboot with keyboard.
Mouse works but keyboard fails to activate.
Used mouse to warm reboot (reboot command in a WB menu).
Keyboard still not activated.
Hit reset button.
Network started but neither YAM or Odyssey find a network.
Warm reboot with keyboard.
USB HID keyboard crashes (see crashlog at the bottom of this post)
Hit reset button.
Neither keyboard or mouse work.
Powered down and back on.
Mouse & keyboard finally work.
Plug in USB flash drive but blank Usb widow pops up & drive inaccesable (even after several replugins).
Warm reboot with keyboard.
FInally, everything works.

I did notice something that might be important. I use a network adapter that is powered from a USB connection. It has has an LED power indicator. On my X1000, the adapter power indicator comes on during CFE boot and stays on all the way through OS4 booting. On my X5000, the adapter power indicator comes on during UBOOT boot and goes of when UBOOT is completed. It doesn't come back on until OS4 boot is nearly finished. Personally, I don't see why the USB power should be shut off once it is on. It's possible that powering USB off and on is causing some of the USB peripheral recognition to fail.

I've seen posts where others have this mouse/keyboard failure. Is it being worked on and is there a workaround?

This is the only one that I observe.
Also happens on a Sam460ex so it probably a a U-boot thing.
Only had a Mouse issue once .

Thanks for replying. I've tried everything I could think of to remedy the situation, with no success. I tried moving USBCtrl to different positions in the startup-sequence and switched to an alternate boot partition that is formatted with SFS2. It didn't help but when I changed partitions by changing priority for a partition, saving the changes from Media ToolBox and rebooting, I endup with 2 more HID crashes.

Try a different keyboard and mouse.
I am using a Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball and a A-Eon AmigaOne wired keyboard .
Also have a StarTech Mini USB Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter constantly connect for use under Linux .

My Microsoft wired keyboard and wireless mouse work flawlessly on SAM440 and X1000 so I don't think it's those devices that are at fault. I have an A-Eon AmigaOne wired keyboard but the letter "t" started sticking and printing two t's but I might try it anyway. This morning when I turned my system on it was the keyboard that wasn't recognized. However, I have an icon on AmiDock that runs "USBCtrl RESET" that is working well and activated my keyboard. The reset seems to be more reliable that reboting.

I made this post and included a crash log so a betatester could file a bug report and get the problem examined. In the meantime, I'll try some other input devices and set up a "reset" workaround that will work from the keyboard too.

The common problem here is U-Boot. Note that it doesn't fail with CFE on the X1k.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to get any maintenance performed on the X5k's U-Boot, since it was not done by Hyperion and we devs have no sources for it.

Personally I am using a Microsoft wired kbd and mouse on my X5k and I have no problems. The model is "Microsoft 600 Wired Desktop".

I'm also using a "Microsoft 600 Wired Desktop" keyboard but using a "Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000". I rummaged through a closet and found an old wired mouse which solves my problems. For whatever reason the wireless mouse causes problems that even prevent the wired keyboard from working and effect the overall X5000 operation. However, I also discovered that I can plug the wireless mouse in through one of my unpowered USB2 hubs and it seems to work fine. Two other hubs I tried had no effect which seems peculiar. For now I have 2 solutions to the problem and my system is working normally. I think someone still needs to let whoever is responsible for UBOOT know that there is a problem with some wireless mice like my Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000. It's not a cheap mouse and works great on my X1000.

On the subject of UBOOT, I noticed in the UBOOT menus that there is an option to start MorphOS. Does MorphOS work on the X5000??

I have same, and other problems with keyboards in the X5000.
Tested some different keyboards and mouses, with and without cord.
The only brand that work in all models is Logitech.

I know you're trying to be helpfull but my reason for reporting stuff here is to get it fixed. As I told Tony, I have a wired mouse that works and have discovered that plugging my wireless mouse into an external hub also works. The maximum satisfaction that can be expected from an excuse is zero so I suppose I need to report this problem elsewhere in an effort to get it fixed. Other than this USB issue, I'm happy with my X5000 so far.

I believe so. And it was even shown on the X5000 already in Neuss almost two years ago by the MorphOS guys, so it presumably worked on X5000 before AmigaOS did. (Disclaimer: I don't know the details about how well it works or worked in daily use, but the demo was quite impressive.)

Best regards,

Niels
