Audio Setup for noob

Post by donfirth »

I purchased :
Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital Model SB0220 PCI Sound Card
I am unclear on how to setup.
I tried AHI and can get different tones, but I don't get sound from games.
One specifies the sound is disabled.
Is there some detailed instructions somewhere.
...Thanks for any help...

Did you select the SBLive card in your Sound Prefs?

When I installed a new card (not the model you have) my Sound Prefs saw the card and I was able to select it from there. Then sound just works in all apps.

Thanks for getting me to look again.
The solution was just using the drop down menu for each and selecting the driver that I got the tone from. (EMU10K)

Indeed, the emu10k is one. ;-)
I purchased a similar card but it did not work for me.
Glad you found once with the right chipset.
Enjoy!

I got lucky and won 2 ESI Juli@ PCI soundcards on an auction site this week, one second hand and one brand new.
Both cards were revision:j but looked kinda different.

Tried the brand new one first which didn't show up in AHI? Removed it and re-mounted it, no go...
Tried the second hand card, worked like a charm!

Going to peel of the ESI sticker of the soundchip on the non working card and report back what it says on the chip.

EDIT:Checked it now, the chip says: Envy24HT-S. So thats the problem, alot of the SMD components are also different
from the other card, the TRS sockets look cheaper as well.. My guess is that this is a last batch cost reduced card.
So watch out if you are buying a brand new ESI Juli@ PCI.

Will AmigaOS find the right driver for the card?
I can't find a way to choose the driver manually.. So i'm guessing it finds the right one?

As long as the driver is in SYS:Devs/AHI, AHI will find it. If it finds it, it will show up in the AHI preferences. If you have the Enhancer Sound prefs installed, it will show up in the "Mode settings" tab.

The usual startup includes AHI running every driver it has.
Each driver should try to locate it's "target", and return as failed if not found.
Not the most elegant solution, but it has worked so far.

If you watch the debug output, you'll see a variety of "not found" messages, this is AHI starting up.

Iguess you could make the startup slightly faster by only installing the audio driver you need, but this would defeat the automatic nature of the system.

As far as setting up the Audio Prefs, the design of the window is deceptive. It would make a LOT more sense visually if there were a separate tab for each unit, instead of the current drop down selector.

But it sounds like you sucessfully navigated all this by now.
