You should be able to update Mesa, but I doubt you'd see much improvement, if any. I know there have been many improvements to the r600 driver for Mesa 18 but I haven't read anything about improvements to swrast. If you do decide to upgrade I'd be interested to know if you see any improvement...

Just in case anyone is interested, VisionTek still manufacturers and sells Radeon HD 5450 and Radeon HD 6450 as their ultra low-cost and low-cost video card options (I verified with VisionTek they still actually actively manufacture these cards). You can purchase on their website. Both of these would offer hardware acceleration in Linux.
HD 6450 - $70: https://www.visiontek.com/radeon-6450-1 ... i-vga.html
HD 5450 - $40: https://www.visiontek.com/visiontek-rad ... i-vga.html

I have successfully compiled and installed Mesa 18.0.3 on my X5000. I have made the compiled Mesa 18.0.3 available at http://ppcutopia.ddns.net/html/mesa-18.0.3.tar.gz
Install using the same instructions Christian provided for Mesa 18.0.0.

I compiled Mesa 18.1.1 and made it available at http://ppcutopia.ddns.net/html/mesa-18.1.1.tar.gz.
Install using the same instructions Christian provided for Mesa 18.0.0. I also compiled VDPAU and it seems to work.

Hi Casey
Tried to install using Xeno's instructions but no luck. Stuck on 18.0.0 (obviously changed files to copy in his instructions). Any ideas of what I might be doing wrong?

Cheers
